From the DMN:
Allen running back DeMyron Martin orally committed to SMU on Monday. Martin (6-2, 200) said he chose SMU because of the chance to turn around the Mustangs struggling football program. Martin is also being recruited by Texas A&M and TCU. Martin will take his official visit to SMU on Jan. 9 and then take an official visit to Texas A&M on Jan. 23.
Oral commitments are nonbinding. The first day a recruit can sign a letter of intent is Feb. 4, 2004.
Also:
Ennis nose guard Tommy Daniels orally committed to Tulsa after his official visit this past weekend. Daniels (6-3, 310) said he liked the chemistry between he and the Tulsa players and that Tulsa coaches told him he could start as a freshman. Daniels is also being recruited by Kansas St., Wisconsin, Baylor, Toledo and Arizona. Although he said he is a solid commitment to Tulsa, Daniels will take an official visit to Toledo on Friday and Arizona on Jan. 16.
Oral commitments are nonbinding. The first day a recruit can sign a letter of intent is Feb. 4, 2004.

that is great-I think other than McClinton I would have him at the Top of my Most Wanted List. His season reminds me a great deal of the season Robert Merrill had as a senior-kid came out of nowhere to lead his team to the State Championship-Martin came up one game short through no fault of his own with 188 yards on 22 carries. Don't pay too much attention to his low ratings by the services-he was hurt as a junior and rose out of nowhere to become I think a legitimate Top 100 Player-they are only now starting to pay attention to him. Massey and Martin-the M&M Boys Ride Again. As for Tulsa-we may have screwed up big time by not hiring Todd Graham-he is really getting an unprecedented quality of kids for Tulsa with 3 Top Players from the Metroplex.

Martin's a great pickup! The guys who follow this stuff -- Recruiting Guru, Stallion, Lotus etc. -- seem to think very highly of him, and more often than not, their opinions are pretty accurate.
But we lost Daniels to TULSA? Hey, they had a nice season. Congrats to them and their long-suffering fans. But he has to live in TULSA for the next 4 years! I bet Mike Stoops puts a pretty hard sell on the kid. Losing him to 'Zona would be a little easier to stomach.

The Ponies now better watch out for Henderson taking visits. He was promised to be the only TB in this class. Colorado St., Arizona, Utah and New Mexico are among a few trying to get him to set a visit.

Or is Martin being recruited as an athlete, with the possibility of playing another position? I was under the impression Henderson's commitment was as solid as they come.

We've got to have both of them. SMU needs to stockpile athletes, not athletic guys. I mean guys who can play, who have some real backbone, not just guys who look nice to the guys holding stopwatches. And it sounds like Henderson and Martin are players.

1411,
I think I remember Bennett saying the same thing – that Henderson was going to be the only tailback in this class. HOWEVER, Bennett loves recruiting RBs because often they are the most talented and athletic kids on a high school team. With his size, I imagine they could be looking at DeMyron Martin as a nice-sized DB, but I don't know that for sure. I only know that has been Bennett's formula for cranking out GREAT DBs in the past.

Right - from what I read when he committed to SMU, Henderson cited the school's outstanding academic reputation and the chance to help build the program into something great. He can still do that, regardless of what position he plays. If he had an agreement from the coaches that he'd be played at RB, he should trust that he'll be at RB. Remember, this is a staff that took over when the previous staff already had accumulated about a dozen commitments, and these coaches honored each and every one. If there's one thing these coaches have shown in their recruiting practices, it is that they are true to their word. If Henderson gets to SMU and they suddenly decide that he's best suited at defensive tackle, or punter, or anywhere in between, that's their right - their job is to make the team better in every way available to them. But if they said they're going to play him at RB, I'm sure they will.

I seem to remember Henderson being quoted as saying "they are going to give me a shot at RB". I'm sure a lot of I-A schools liked his speed and athleticism and might see him as a DB or WR, but I gather the coaches must have told him if he wanted a shot at RB, he'd get it. Of course, he did hurt his knee late this year and is small for a I-A RB. You can't have enough RBs in the stable, because guys do get hurt at that position. With Munlin and Massey and the other frosh coming in, Henderson might get to RS and rehab that knee. Or, he might never regain the speed that made him the player he was when he committed. Anyone have any info on the injury?
