Stallion's Offer Analysis-(UPDATED)

Postby Stallion » Sun Feb 01, 2009 9:12 pm

I don't represent this system to be perfect but quite frankly I think its probably just as good an analysis as you will see on the recruiting services which have their own unique quirks and inconsistencies. I had no idea how this would play out before I did it but it has good and bad perspective on SMU's Class. I included TCU as our biggest rival;

The first list analyzes total offers from all other D1A schools:

1. TCU 92
2. Tulsa 62
3. UCF 57
4. Southern Miss 55
5. SMU 45
6. Tulane 41
7. Rice 38
8. UAB 34
9. UH 33
10. Marshall 28
11. ECU 23
12. Memphis 20
13 UTEP 15

The second list analyzes total offers from BCS schools;

1. TCU 51
2. UCF 43
3. Southern Miss 34
4. Tulsa 30
5. UAB 19
6. UH 17
7. Rice 16
8. Marshall 14
9(tie) SMU 12
9. ECU 12
11.(tie) Memphis 5
11. Tulane 5
12. UTEP 4

Conclusion: SMU really was quite competitive considering its record against non-BCS schools. BCS level recruits may want to see more in the W-L record to begin to commit to SMU. The first list (total offers) rates SMU's Class higher than Rivals in either Total Points(8th) or Average Points(9th). TCU has an outstanding BCS level Class easily beating all schools by any measure or service you want to use. Central Florida might be very underrated by Rivals and may have the strongest CUSA Class with a very high percentage of its recruits receiving a very high ratio of BCS offers(43 out of 57 total offers). UH lost a very good WR Willie Jefferson that brought their position down. Rice's Class ranked higher than I thought. A very high percentage of Tulane's offers came against Sun Belt schools, Army, MAC schools and other marginal programs. Marshall had the fastest close adding 13 Total Offers and 10 BCS Offers in recent days to pass SMU on BCS offers-they may have been holding some commits back or at least they weren't previously reported. Memphis' class may not be as strong as some recruiting services suggest. UTEP had a pretty undistinguished class

If I had the rate the Classes by this information I'd probably rank them:

1. UCF 43-57
2. Southern Miss 34-55
3. Tulsa 30-62
4. UAB 19-34 (Comment: 4, 5, 6 and 7 are very close)
5. SMU 12-45
6. Rice 15-38
7. UH 17-33
8. Marshall 14-28
9. ECU 12-23
10. Tulane 5-38
11. Memphis 5-20
12. UTEP 4-15

Of course, some schools like UTEP, UAB and Marshall had small classes so this would hurt their scores. TCU also has a relatively small class but scored out on top anyway further highlighting how good the class really is.

Thank you Stallion. I don't suppose you could include Baylor?
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Good work Stallion. Coming off consecutive 1 win seasons, a big step in the right direction, adding athletic players and speed. Is Matt Scymanski, Margus Hunt, and J J McDermott factored in? Probably not, but just asking.

No they are not factored in-most schools have similiar players not factored in either. And really SMU gets the advantage in this calculation by having the biggest recruiting class already.

In the BCS list, UAB has 16, does the bulk of that reflect the (8?) juco's they got?

I'm not sure-a lot of those JUCOs really don't get many offers-yet a high percentage get 3 stars-I've always been a tad skeptical about some of those 3 star ratings by JUCOs. I'm skeptical of Ryan Clark's 4 star rating as well. I think one of the problem is I don't see them adjusting the ratings on JUCOs much. And the recruiting season for JUCOs is shorter, the spotlight on JUCOs is not as intense and who exactly compares players from across the country in Kansas, Texas, Mississippi, California. Plus some are placed and never consider other schools. All the rating systems have their faults. But Division 1A transfers aren't considered by the recruiting services.

I have decided to grade each school on a non-athletic basis; focusing instead on Academic Reputation, Alumni Notoriety and Support, School Location, Campus Appeal (building and creature), as well as Prestige of Diploma. I don't represent this system to be perfect; I had no idea how this would play out before I did it. I also included TCU as they are our biggest rival.

1. SMU 98
2. Rice 97
3. Tulane 94
4. UCF 83
5. TCU 81
6. Tulsa 80
7. UTEP 63
8. Memphis 60
9. Coog High 59
10. ECU 57
11. UAB 51
12. Southern Miss 48
13. Marshall 41

UPDATED. Baylor finished strong with 9 new Total Offers and 6 BCF Offers including taking Willie Jefferson away from Houston which I hadn't previously noticed. Baylor would finish behind TCU even though they have 7 more commitments. Baylor would probably finish higher than all CUSA teams. 89 Total Offers-51 BCS Offers which tied TCU but with about 7 more recruits

Stallion,

While you are on the subject, can you explain why Rivals has Rice listed higher that SMU (205 - 190 total points) when SMU has more recruits (26-23), more 4 stars (1-0), more 3 stars (7-3) and higher average stars (2.35-1.87)?
