It will not give me the option to join, because I'm not in the "SMU network." I once tried to join the SMU network, and it said I had to enter a valid SMU email address. As an alum, I ain't got one of those.

send a message to the admin to invite you to the group or open the group to people outside of the smu network

Set up your smualumni.smu.edu address on Peruna.Net to forward to your regular email. That address will work.

I would join, but like a super hero, I must keep my identity hidden
