Re: Enough is enoughHey folks, can we keep the personal anger out of the thread? I don't think this will help in any regard. GRGB, don't be so harsh on Stallion, as he does seem to know what he speaks of, like it or not. I've had qualms with some of his comments, but if everyone gave a damn as much as he does, SMU would be a lot better off. Like BUS, I too am tired of losing. I'm no major donor to the Mustang Club, but I do give what I can. What saddens me is that we can't all get to the same page, and make a conserted push to help get our Ponies going.
Yes, we've gotten some good kids to come in on our o and d lines, but as Stallions points out, it would do us some good toget some better, bigger kids. I also think it would help if our student body and recent alums made more effort to support the teams. Having a small core of solid, older alums supporting the program won't cut it. In the name of Doak Walker, LET'S GET IT DONE! Go Ponies!
Re: Enough is enoughGRGB lists Brad Bean above as a DL, but I thought he had to quit on account of recurring injuries. Will Bean be back in the spring or even the fall?
Re: Enough is enoughNo, Brad Bean retired after re-injuring his back. He reportedly will remain with the team as a student assistant coach.

Re: Enough is enougheveryone can agree that if quality linemen are available and interested in SMU, they should be offered. There are several guys on the current roster who may never see the field. Guys transfer all the time when they realize they will never see the field. That's true with many of the linemen on our roster and now also at the QB position. We've got so far to go in terms of upgrading our talent level that it's a no-brainer we will see more transfers in the next year or two.
Re: Enough is enoughOK guys and dolls... we are all MUSTANGS and want SMU to get back to winning.
I read Stallions post and he has good things to say.. We have a lot of work yet to be done. Athlete friendly majors for one. I am/was a Physical Education Major and enjoyed my time on the hilltop. No I did not go to teach or coach full time but have helped coach many teams with my children. It was cool. I would like to see a sports management degree come out of already available courses from the B-school and from our law school. NO that would not be an EASY path but at least an interesting one for athletically minded students. Let's all pull together and support the team and coaches. Merry Christmas all. Re: Enough is enoughI make a comment, he bashes comments that I never said, as though I did.
I never bashed his comment, and I never diminished what he has to say. I agree we need BETTER players, but, guess what everyone: we have better players than under Cavan/Rosseley/Gregg, BUT they are FRESHMEN. Also, we aren't going to BLAZE into TOP10 recruiting status until we win a little with these players - you can only sell so much on REBUILDING the program. Until you get some of it rebuilt, we aren't going to attract SOME of the top players. I hear several people complaining about the MODEL at SMU...but NONE of them has taken the time to have a private conversation with ANYONE at the ATHLETIC department...so THEY are speaking out of their ASSS. Yes, I want 20 Top100s, but we will have to settle for 7-8 first, then get better, then go for 10-15. At any rate, there are plenty of jewels out there that just require better recruiting efforts to find. It's easy to just go and get the best 'rated' players on the board - judged basically by what schools are recruiting them...but remember also, that big schools are lazier (because basically they can be) recruiters -- they don't need to spend as much time looking deeper into the stats. Remember, that in 1999-01 we were on probation, and our coaches at the time were limitted on visits (and number of coaches). Plus, we were limitted by 2-3 per year for 3 years...these are SOME of the reasons the Jr and Sr classes at SMU are not very fertile with numbers and quality, and this is a very sound reason why we lack starters this year that performed where even CAVAN had them performing. Like I said before, if you ONLY recruit JUCOs you will have to always recruit JUCOs, because they only stick around 2 years. I want to fill glaring holes as well as anyone, but that is not a model that we can move forward by. That being said, we just signed 3 JUCOs plus 2 transfers. Now, that is improvement in the MODEL, but none of the naysayers will admit that. Under CAVAN our recruiting ranks were in the 90s, but under BENNETT, for the 3rd straight year we are in the 50s...that is improvement -- and that includes JUCOs (which are less permanence in rankings -- i.e., Tech has 8-9 JUCOs, well, they will have to keep doing that or in 2 years they will have a big drop off - we can't win that battle).
Re: Enough is enoughWARNING: The above poster CONSISTENTLY gets his facts wrong and ALWAYS slants his opinions in favor of SMU. If you rely on anyway this guy says about recruiting or predictions do so at your own risk-you may end up looking foolish like him-hey genius why in the heck should people like me criticize SMU for taking 3-4 JUCOs when I've been saying the EXACT same things for 15 years-in fact I've been using the "3-4 JUCOs per year in Football and 1-2 JUCOs per year in Basketball" line for years now. Apparently, Bennett has adopted the Stallion Model and failed to quote me. Truthfully, I am a little disappointed that the DMN article wasn't entitled SMU/BENNETT ADOPT THE STALLION MODEL. What I want to know is where are all the people that have been criticizing me for the last 15 years who were constantly arguing that SMU's coaches were philosophically against JUCOs and minimum qualifiers, SMU should be the Harvard of the South and would never change academic policies. Looks like my argument won although when SMU recruits the best JC recruits at all 22 positions instead of just QB is the day I'll claim victory.

Re: Enough is enoughActually I think you appear to be claiming victory today - based on your post above.
Re: Enough is enoughyeah, facts. tell me the wrong facts, go research it. the only thing you will find is my exhuberance for SMU in a rah-rah manner. Facts I spoke of before the season: Tech has 9 returning offensive players, and a new QB. I said, depending on the QB, we may be able to exploit them. FACT: I said MAY. FACT: Their QB play was suberb AND SMU played the best against him than any other team this season (due to it probably being his first game). FACT: I said we will WIN THE GAME vs Baylor...and we didn't. Quite frankly, we should have if not for Chris Cunningham's fumbled KR. FACT: I said the model had changed, and you said it hadn't. FACT: Now you are claiming that it has and it is modeled after your 'stallion model'. FACT: you are banned former booster and don't deny it.
Re: Enough is enoughOne Stallion forgot: Sterling Harris was very highly recruited and ranked, I believe.
On another note, can someone stop GoRedGoBlue's whining? It's getting really old again, and it makes this board intolerable.
Re: Enough is enoughThis site is not about us (posters), it's about SMU. You're both very knowledgeable about recruiting and clearly spend a hell of a lot of time researching this stuff. Now get over the "who knows more?" debate.
Re: Enough is enoughUpon further consideration comment withdrawn. Peace to all.

Re: Enough is enoughSterling Harris graduated so I didn't include him. I added the words "highly regarded" not just "highly recruited" specifically to include Justin Boren and then I forgot to list him. I reality, at the time Boren committed to SMU he couldn't be called "highly recruited" but he got so much recognition and acclaim for his performance during his senior year that he should have been included which was an oversight.

Re: Enough is enoughAgain, there's a problem when evaluating strictly on what the recruiting services say...
Justin could have obtained a scholarship (literally) to almost any school he wanted to go to. But he is an extremely ethical young man who was raised to believe that his word is his bond. When the coaches saw Boren obliterating people in one of the summer camps, they offered him on the spot. From that point forward, Justin and his parents stopped taking calls from other schools. And it's kind of hard for a coach to offer a kid when the kid won't even take your call. But it's a matter of fact that Justin Boren graded out even higher in his district than that Ofa Mohetau kid – the 5 star, #1 ranked guard in the nation, whose trip to BYU was cited by Rivals as being "Merely a speedbump on the road to the NFL." Hey, I read the recruiting services too. Good info there. But they're only one component in evaluating talent, and shouldn't be taken as the Gospel truth. [ 12-19-2003, 12:03 PM: Message edited by: PerunaPunch ] "It's a couple hundred million dollars. Re: Enough is enoughtrue but the recruiting services all raised him to a 3 star after his senior year and Emfinger also named him to his Super Team All-State in recognition of his senior year-that's why I include him as a recruit who was "highly regarded"
