I don't remember Stallion ever saying that PJ couldn't coach, just that he wouldn't be the right fit at SMU.Alaric wrote:per rivals, all of their signees were two star or lower in 2007 & for the previous 3 years. stallion's point really was that PJ had success at Navy not because he was a great coach but b/c he had the chance to winnow through massive amts of recruits to get good players...also said he didn't necessarily know how to coach. we'll see...not relevant to smu's future anyway. i just like PJ and always haveSoCal_Pony wrote:They must have caught Lighting in a Bottle in '07...8 of their 20 signees were 4 stars.Dwan wrote:

UVA is every bit as academically challenging as G Tech - and they got five 4 stars? I dont really think the comparison is worth talking about - (Dodge vs Johnson) but just wanted to point out academic requirements for joe schmo prospective students don't have jack to do with how many 4 stars football recruits a school ends up with - virtually all the players are admission exceptions anyway.
your UVA example is horrible one at best. When Al Grolh took over at UVA, one of the reasons he took the job, was because he had a deal with the school that he could let in guys that he really wanted, regardless of grades. At the time he was a former NFL coach and UVA was stoked to have him. His first or second classes were filled with high ranking academic risks.....I forget his name, but one of the top LBs in the nation, who was from Virginia and one of the top 10 players in the nation, some people had him ranked as the top prospect int the nation, signed with UVA but did not qualify.....I guy who could not qualifly getting into UVA!
And I think Stallion is a great poster and knows more about recruiting than most. I just like to bust his balls because he slams everyone and is never wrong in his mind....I just like to point out when he is dead wrong....like Paul Johnson, Todd Dodge, Bamba Fall, and Branon Coluccio.

Stallion's two main points of emphasis with Paul Johnson were a) that his antiquated offense couldn't work in major college football and b) that PJ wasn't a proven recruiter. He preached this long and hard, let me assure you. Personally, I think PJ's going to have big success at GaTech but time will tell so we'll see who was correct eventually. No big deal, I'd rather have JJ than PJ anyway.abezontar wrote:I don't remember Stallion ever saying that PJ couldn't coach, just that he wouldn't be the right fit at SMU.Alaric wrote:SoCal_Pony wrote: They must have caught Lighting in a Bottle in '07...8 of their 20 signees were 4 stars.

Alaric, key word here is TECH...GA Tech signed 8 4-Stars in 2007. This was in response to Dwan's comment regarding their recruiting.Alaric wrote:per rivals, all of their signees were two star or lower in 2007 & for the previous 3 years.SoCal_Pony wrote:They must have caught Lighting in a Bottle in '07...8 of their 20 signees were 4 stars.Dwan wrote:

Re: Todd Dodge vs Paul Johnson
this is an idiotic comparison. Georgia Tech is a BCS school and is MUCH easier to attract recruits to than UNT. Georgia Tech had a decent team before PJ took over - and they had a very good year this year. UNT has sucked for a while.Dwan wrote:UNT's class ranked 116 and Georgia Tech's ranked 32 in the nation.
Odd, I remember so many post about how Todd Dodge and his ties to texas high school coaches would make him a master recruiter and that he would be an amazing college coach.....and at the same time, Paul Johnson had a recruiting advantage at Navy and could not attract talent to play in his system.
This doesn't come down to who is a better recruiter. This comes down to the schools that these 2 coaches are at.
This goes along with the analysis of JJ's recruiting class this year. It's pretty damn hard to convince quality players to come to a school that has sucked for a while - even if you are a "master recruiter"

Last time I checked, not of those schools finished in the TOP 10 latelyStallion wrote:Georgia Tech finished 49th and 46th in Average. In other words they were outrecruited by TCU. Finished 8th and 7th in the ACC. Scout is irrelevant. How about Elite 4-5 Stars which BCS schols should compete for:
North Carolina 14
Florida St. 12
Miami 11
Clemson 7
Maryland 6
Virginia 5
Virginia Tech 5
Duke 2
Georgia Tech 1

Dwan - you said G tech could not get 4 or 5 stars due to their academic requirements - that is incorrect - many of the schools within their peer group that are just as challenging do get those recruits - they do what G Tech and every other good football program does - make exceptions.
UVA is the perfect example.
