Remaining scholarships

Postby PonyTales » Sat Jan 03, 2004 2:58 am

OK, as I count it, we have these scholarships already accounted for:

(Sat out 2003)
1. Charles Akineyemi
2. Foy Munlin
3. Dominic Pryor

(JUCO players)
4. Bobby Chase
5. Tony Eckert
6. Jared Romo

(Incoming freshmen)
7. Cortley Blackmon
8. Vincent Chase
9. Jessie Henderson
10. Jonathan Lindley
11. Devin Lowery
12. DeMyron Martin
13. Wilton McCray
14. Andrew McKinney

Does that mean we have four left? If so, who are our top remaining priorities?

Personally, I'd like to see:
Garland (Lakeview Centennial) DT James McClinton
Hillsboro WR Donald Massey
Irving DT George Paongo
A surprise announcement at OL

If we round it out with those final 4 on your list, that would be a decent class, wouldn't stallion agree?

If we sign a kid that says he has no interest in SMU(Massey), and kid who says he's narrowed his choices to Kansas and Iowa(McClinton), and an unnamed superstar OLM that would be quite an accomplishment. As for Paogno-I was the first one who mentioned him on this board when he was named as his District's MVP at Bennett's brother's school. I really don't know what king of college prospect he is as there has been zero recruiting buzz on him. Just intriqued by the Samoans who play in the WAC and wonder if he might be that kind of sleeper.

There was talk that Bennett was going to sign a HS QB for this class under the guise of "I am never going to let what happened before happen again". I don't know how signing a second JuCo QB affects that plan.

Massey has SMU in his last four choices (along with Notre Dame, Oklahoma State and Mizzou).

And I've heard the same things about a possible HS quarterback signing, but with the arrival of Eckert and Romo, I'd bet he'd have to be very highly regarded to get a scholarship at this point. We seem to have a pretty big collection of QBs.

that is inaccurate based on I surmise are out of date DMN News reports. Latest quotes from 2 weeks ago have him visiting Tulsa, TCU, Arkansas, and Houston. His favorite is LSU but they haven't offered a scholarship or visit. He hasn't mentioned SMU in about 3 months in about 6 reports I've seen.

Isn't that "out of date DMN report" compiled by your friends at Rivals that you're always quoting? And he never needed an official visit, since he's been here to visit Richuel. I'm not saying we'll get him, but I don't think he can be written off just yet.

And George Paongo needs to get an offer now.

Rivals is up to date. The DMN is just too damn lazy to check.

Less than one month until National Signing Day (Feb. 4)!

What kind of numbers did Massey put up this season at Hillsboro?

Add David Haynes.

That leaves us with three 'ships remaining.

Question: I've also heard that we're working with 18 ships this year. But does that figure include last year's transfers (Munlin and Akenyemi)? I assumed, probably erroneously, that they were already on scholarship (which would give us at least 2 more ships to speculate about), and that they only couldn't play in games last season as D1-A transfers.

When a player transfers and we offer a scholarship, I assume we pick up the tab the moment they step foot on campus. If that were the case, their ships would already be accounted for and not included in this year's 18.

Does anyone know the NCAA guidelines on when a transfer's scholarship takes effect? PX, anybody??

I assume the numbers we have been working with are correct, meaning three 'ships remaining. These numbers seem to be verified by what the coaches have said at the last few coach's breakfasts.

I don't know the rule, but my guess is that transfers, even though on scholarship, don't count toward the 85 limit until they are eligible to play.

the ceiling we are dealing with is the 85 man limit not the yearly 25 man limit so it doesn't matter which class the transfers count under.

Actually, Charles Akinyemi, Foy Munlin and Dominic Pryor all were walk-ons last year, so three of this year's 'ships will go to them.
