SMU Gets Big Time Commitment!!!

At this stage of our program, anytime we can get a top 100 recruit, it is huge. Especially on the D side of the ball.

I can't ever remember seeing us listed by so many TX Top 100 players either (in the past maybe 5, if we were lucky). This time through I counted more like 15, most with SMU offers and listing medium interest. And while I love the skill players, it is great to see us in the mix for some of these highly rated big uglies.....that's were good football teams are built.

Kids who commit this early are less likely to decommit. I feel confident we can keep him in the fold as long as we don't go 1-11 again this year.

I would really like to see what JJ can do recruiting wise coming off a winning season or even a .500 season. Reputation is so big with 17-18 year old kids, if we can ever break the cycle of losing and get it in kids minds that SMU can win.....similar to what TCU has done, there is a lot of potential on the Hilltop.

There are actually 23 out of the top 100 prospects that listed us as one of their favorites. Of those 23, 3 have committed elsewhere & the 1 to us.

Tracking the history of Michael O'Guin its amazing that Scouts have even found him to include in any Top Texas List. Let's see he started as a Sophmore I believe at Fort Bend Marshall not Hightower then apparently transferred to Fort Bend Hightower-which is how he knows Darrius Johnson then followed his Dad to Van Vleck where he played his Junior year. I don't think he ever actually played at Hightower because his Dad got the Van Vleck job-hope I got that right. He's been at 3 schools following his Dad by his Junior year. Sometimes a recruit can get lost in the shuffle like that. The kid really gets around for an Irishman. Its good that although he's now a 2A player he's competed at both Marshall and Hightower both of which have been loaded with top athletes. Hopefully, there might be some more contacts at both Ft. Bend Marshall and Hightower that both Dad and Son have come across that might show some interest in SMU. Both schools have had 7-8+ prospects in recent years.

Michael O'Guin was never at Hightower, not sure where that came from. His dad was at Marshall when hired by Van Vleck and he played at Marshall.

well I found several sources that said he was at Hightower entering into his Junior season but I can't see he ever played there. He's also mentioned that he was a former teammate of Johnson. I know the Hightower/Marshall districts also apparently split in recent years. Its a little unclear but there are sources that say that. Maybe his Dad got the Van Vleck job after he had transferred but not played for Hightower. I'm not too sure myself. Here's one of those sources:

BTW Fort Bend Marshall-where Dad was "Recruiting Coordinator" already has 7 players in the 2010 Rivals recruiting database more than even State Finalist Hightower which has 5

The new publisher at Scout.com actually talked to Mr. O'Guin last night and confirmed he was at Hightower and knows Daruis as well.

At what point does Rivals usually start assigning stars to these junior prospects? Knowing that the "stars" system is hardly a perfect talent-gauge, does anyone have any thoughts to what level recuit he is. . .3 star. . .4 star?

My guess is he would be a 3-star...maybe if he has a great season, could be upgraded to 4 star during the season...a lot will depend on the other offers he gets...but i doubt he will be upgraded to 4..looks lilke a solid 3 star (this is all speculation on my part)

I wouldnt be suprised if he ends up a 4 star. He has an offer from us and K State (big 12 BCS) after his junior year at a 2A school. I bet once other schools get to look at him he will have many more offers from BCS schools and therefore a higher ranking. Just speculation on my part as well.

The #76 ranked player in Texas on Rivals Top 100 for 09 was a 3 star.

He would have been our highest rated recruit in last years class. However, I think Rivals really undervalued Darius Johnson. That kid is 4 star talent and will be a monster for us for the next few years.
