Can you at least let them get through spring football when most of the position battles will be settled before you make this prediction?

I dont need to get through the spring to know that we have no depth at DT or DE...

I will throw out a little sunshine and say our O will be twice as productive!

I was too baffled by it to even come up with a response

Thanks SMU 86. You guys are more in tune with SMU athletics being there in Dallas so I'll have to depend on ya'lls thoughtful insight. I know there have been complaints regarding the DMN coverage of SMU but believe me The Midland Reporter Telegram doesn't even know how to spell SMU. I follow the mustangs as best I can. If anyone ever has any questions regarding any athletes at here in W. Texas just let me know and, I'll do the best I can to answer them.

Evan Huahulu

Postby UncleOfEvan » Thu Mar 05, 2009 3:33 pm

Spring football practice will separate the starters from the backups. No need to rush. We need to stop the rush. We need pressure on the QB. We have the strength and talent to make strides this year on the D & O lines if the coaches and staff prove their ability to motivate and come up with some nicely tuned strategies. We know that talent is there.

As for my nephew Evan Huahulu, here is my take.

I watched him play HS ball for two years at Servite where he quietly and under the radar made life miserable for running backs and QB's in the Trinity League. He wrestled as well for three years and came two matches away from being Cally State Heavyweight Champ and of course took CIF Trinity Champ at Servite - we know from this that he knows how to use his hands and body productively, especially his huge legs. If you get a chance to see him squat don't pass it up. It's quite a show.

His intermittent end of game playing and a bit of special teams play last season was planned and of course needed for him. Good for Evan's mind and his body. He has become stronger, has become even more confident and is weight training religiously, converting fat weight to muscle. He's about 320 right now moving to 305 by the time the season starts. He will be ready for spring practice and will be ready for the season, no doubt.

My prediction is he will start on the D line. It's where he will be most needed that will determine where, not whether he will start. Time for a little Tongan/Irish Warrior Mustang Defense!

Thanks for the bandwidth.

Thanks Uncle Jimmy:
Evan will grow and it takes time to get used to the speed of Div 1 football. The wrestling is one thing I like about Evan and all NT/DT type recruits. For me, it shows they know how to change levels.

I know we both hope Evan drops a few pounds and is in step with the faster college game.
Peace be with you.

Baby pics

Postby ProudMama » Thu Mar 05, 2009 7:00 pm

Evan was born two weeks early by c/section because he was so huge...he weighed in at 9lbs 12oz. I'm at my brothers house right now in Austin but when I go home tomorrow I'll get one of his baby pictures scanned and see if I can get it posted. For some reason my computer at home does not get along well with ponyfans and it is sometimes difficult to post but I will do my best.

GO MUSTANGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am yet another attorney, and, nonetheless, I am quite confident that our defense will be much improved. Vastly improved pressure upfront.

And the O. will be better, too.

I expect to see quite a rotation on the DL so starters may change. I think Evan and Taylor will continue to make strides and own the start at tackle and end respectively, at least on one side regardless of 3-4 or 4-3 set Mason fields. There will be a rotation in respect to the front seven, and if the Estonian experiment pans out I see him on the right side (because of his throwing prefences in track).

My observations from game film in `08. Evan plays with above average technique for his age and as he matures I think he will control the point of attack better; is stout against the run. Taylor has excellent balance and lateral movement, but would like to see him improve his first step and inside move. As true freshman, they learned first hand what DI football was all about and hopeful have used the offseason to mental and physically prepare for the new year. I would really like to see Reinbold work with Taylor, but he has his own duties. Fun times, these teenagers have tremendous upside, are becoming men before our eyes, and will bring success to the FB program. no kool aid, my thoughts ~alohas
