That is also the year that Tom Osborne retired.

However, Nebraska was in the National Championship game in 2001 under Solich as well. That would be the same number of National Championships as Texas has won since the Big 12 was formed, and one more appearance than Texas in a National Championship game. (Only Oklahoma has more.)

Nebraska also won the Big 12 Championship in 1997 and 1999 (tied with Texas for the 2nd most), and appeared in 4 Big 12 Championship games(tied for 2nd most with Texas and Colorado)....Only Oklahoma has more with 7 appearances and 6 wins.

Your facts are not correct.

Nebraska's problem was Bill Callahan, not the Big 12. Oklahoma went through the same situation after Switzer left, and do we need to even discuss UT's many accomplishments for the quarter century before Mack Brown showed up?.....oh wait, there are none.

Using your logic, the formation of the Big 12 must have made every team other than Oklahoma just gawd awful because as far as I can figure, Nebraska has been the second most successful team in the conference since it was formed.

Its because of recruiting and it ain't likely to change anytime soon. Best players are going to OU and UT and there ain't enough players within 500 miles of Nebraska for Nebraska to do much about that. In fact, both UT and OU have beaten EVERY Big 12 North Team in recruiting every year for the last 7 years UNLESS you count one year where UT signed 15 and Nebraska 30 and one year Nebraska signed 27 and OU signed 21-in both years the average per recruit was easily in favor of UT and OU. The entire Big 12 North has been left in the dust and is roughly comparably to the MWC

There are no fewer players within 500 miles of Nebraska than there were a decade ago. And if it were all about recruiting, then Bill Callahan and Charlie Weis should have made a BCS bowl every year, while Mike Leach and June Jones would be two guys you have never heard of. Oh, and Texas, Oklahoma, and USC would have been unstoppable in the 90's. (Oh wait, that was Nebraska....that place where you have to travel thousands of miles to find a football player.)

Recruiting starts and ends with coaching. Players came to Nebraska to play for Tom Osborne. They go to Oklahoma to play for Bob Stoops. They go to Texas to play for Mack Brown. They go to USC to play for Pete Carroll.

They did NOT go to Oklahoma to play for Gary Gibbs or John Blake, or Texas to play for David McWilliams or Fred Akers, or USC to play for Paul Hackett or Larry Smith.

Location is not the end all of everything football. (And Norman isn't exactly a destination that people are flocking to by the millions either.)

And don't forget there is that little thing called PLAYER DEVELOPMENT. Remember, the reason that we hired June Jones?????????

No UT's best recruited players just turned Pro. Nebraska is 1-18 in head-to-head recruiting battles with UT in the last 3 years though so you did get 1. The entire Big 12 North has only signed 4 players even offered by UT in the last 3 years. So they might lose 1 per year to the Big 12 North that UT actually wanted.

Doesn't say much for the depth of their recruiting classes though, does it then? That is unfortunate. I was really looking forward to the Texas matchup at JerryWorld in December.

You ought to be happy-Nebraska's 1 signee who was offered by UT is the ONLY Big 12 North signee also offered by UT that was even from the State of Texas in the last 3 years. Until the Big 12 North can compete in Texas for the Top players nothing is going to change.

Thankfully I don't base my happiness on how many recruits the football team from my home state gets out of Texas.

However, I'm not so sure that comparing the recruiting classes of a team that recently won a national championship against a team that had its worst season in over 50 years and a coaching change during the 3-year time frame of your sample is really an accurate barometer of much. A recruit would have been insane to turn down Mack Brown to walk into Callahan's mess. I'm actually shocked to hear that one did.

Regardless, we are fairly pleased with the way things are headed up here on the tundra.....and we'll see you in Arlington in December.

Geography is a factor in a school's ability to recruit in football (most kids stay fairly close to home) but it's not always a causal explanation of a school's success in recruiting. Auburn sucks. Miami has had a lot of bad years in recent memory. LSU sucked for a lot of years until Saban showed up.

I think some schools can be outliers b/c of tradition or extraordinary recruiting efforts. Osborne was able to get tons of skill position guys like Tommy Frazier who was from Florida. Speaking of Nebraska, let's not forget Stallion's man crush, Turner Gill who's getting guys from all over the US to go to frigid Buffalo somehow. Premier programs CAN get players from anywhere.

I agree with most of Stallion's recruiting theses but this isn't why Nebraska has gone downhill. It's because of poor management of the program.
