Haynes Update

Postby Mike Damone » Wed Jan 21, 2004 10:46 am

Rivals reported today that David Haynes did not receive a scholarship offer from Arkansas this last weekend. He is still holding out for it and might walk on and try to earn a scholarship in the spring. Said UNT is trying to enter the picture, but he isn't interested. Haynes said it will come down to Arkansas and SMU.
The attitude dictates that you don't care whether she comes, stays, lays, or prays. I mean whatever happens, your toes are still tappin'. Now when you got that, then you have the attitude.

I have a hard time with players who commit and then continue to entertain offers from other schools. If the player isn't sure, he shouldn't commit yet. But once he does, he should honor that commitment. Being the son of a coach, Haynes should understand that.

I disagree. Players that are fortunate enough to get these scholarship offers have to play the recruiting game. They get this chance once and I know that most of them want to be the best decision for themselves. Coaches and schools play the game with them and sometimes circumstances create situations like these. If I was lucky enough to get a couple of offers and possibly another big one, you better believe I would hold out for it. He's just a smart kid playing the system. It happens all the time, he just chose to go public with what he is doing.

I think you both make good points. If a commitment is made, stick with it. But maybe the mistake here is the fact that he went public with it. He could have told our coaches that he was committing, but if there was any doubt or hope for another offer, just don't make the announcement yet. I respect the desire to consider all options, and if an Oklahoma or Miami offer fell in his lap, we'd be hard-pressed to chastise him for listening. Whatever the circumstances, I just hope Haynes ends up on the Hilltop!
