In Today's Climate, Would SMU have made it in 93?

I can buy Mike Wilson being player of the year in the SWC...I think you had earlier listed it was Tim Mason. Both good players, but Wilson was an all around stud.

That was the last fun season for hoops on the Hilltop. Didn't the players force Shumate to run the "up-tempo" style of offense that we played that year?

Hey PonySnob made a good observation. In fact, Shumate was probably-no he was more hated than Doherty because he basically put handcuffs on a very exciting offense for what his first 3 years here-I can't remember exactly. But he was basically playing out his contract and said what the hell I'll turn these kids lose and SMU won the weakest conference championship in modern SMU conference history. To answer the question-no way in hell SMU would have gotten a bid in todays NCAA environment. The SWC was simply awful that year. Didn't someone say our RPI was in the 90s. SMU had some experienced kids that rose to the occassion.

XTC, I can't find it. Are you sure that wasn't Arkansas State? That's what I thought.

One other sidenote. BYU's win over us in the NCAA tournament in 1993 is the Cougars last in the tournament. They are 0-6 since then going into their game against A&M.

That is pretty much my thinking, I could not remember how the other teams of the SWC were that year, but you figure if SMU and Rice are battling for the conference crown, it wasnt good.

I remember hoops being really bad through the mid 90s, lots of weak teams, the bottom seed winning the tournament...etc...

Everyone took a nose dive when Arkansas left.
