SMU To Face LaTech In WNIT
Mustangs, Lady Techsters to tip off Thursday in Ruston
March 16, 2009
DALLAS (SMU) - The Conference USA champion SMU women's basketball team (20-11 overall, 12-4 in C-USA games) makes its second consecutive postseason appearance and 10th overall when the Mustangs face Louisiana Tech Thursday at the Thomas Assembly Center in Ruston, La. Game time has not yet been set.
The game will mark a revival of an old rivalry between former conference foes, as the Mustangs and Lady Techsters used to face off annually as members of the Western Athletic Conference.
The parallels between the Mustangs and Lady Techsters are many: while SMU won the C-USA regular-season crown, LaTech rode a late-season surge, winning its last seven regular-season games and nine of its last 10, to claim a share of the 2008-09 WAC crown. LaTech also mirrors SMU in the win column, entering Thursday's game with 20 victories in its 20-12 record, and like SMU, made it to the semifinals of its conference tournament before falling, 91-88 in overtime, to Nevada.
The winner of Thursday's game will advance to face Illinois State in the second round.
