REPLACING DOH: Billy Gillispie rumored out at UK

If this comes to fruition I say we roll out the red carpet for BG...

"I usually try to avoid speculating on jobs that are not vacant, but unfortunately that is part of the job. That said, I can tell you that all eyes in the college basketball world are on Lexington, Ky. While it may be hard to believe that the school would get rid of Billy Gillispie after two years, I am getting indications that athletic director Mitch Barnhart could very well be moving in that direction. There is a concern that if Gillispie comes back, many of his players will either turn pro or transfer. One well-placed source told me last week that the decision to remove Gillispie was already "done." I believe that was overstated, but Barnhart's relative silence on this matter has been deafening. I left a message for Barnhart over the weekend and my call was returned not by him, but by an athletic spokesman, who naturally told me Barnhart had no comment on the matter. If Barnhart thinks he can wait another few weeks until Kentucky is done playing to resolve this matter, he is sorely mistaken."

Billy Clyde could not win at SMU, where our players have to be able to read, write and don't get paid.

We don't have enough under 22 girls that parents would throw at Gillipsie to make him happy.

You're overlooking the fact that Coach Doherty isn't being replaced this year - nor should he.

Actually Gillispie and Doherty may have similar strengths and weaknesses as smart, hard-driving guys with big egos and bad tempers, but Matt is better at PR and behaving himself off the job.

Low Expectations

Postby Blvd_Stang » Mon Mar 23, 2009 6:11 pm

Doherty just came by the frat house to get us excited about SMU basketball. He explained to us how we need toughness inside and an outside shooter, while explaining the need for student attendance at games. He went on to say that he expects to be at least middle of the pack next year. Why would people flock to games when the expectation is to be middle of the pack? While Doh is a good recruiter and fundraiser, I don't see him giving our players the type of "miracle on ice" motivation needed to play at or beyond their talent level.

It's just disappointing to hear that next years expectation is to be middle of the pack. I would feel more comfortable investing my time as a fan if I knew the expectation, year in and year out, was competing for a conference championship. Whether it is realistic or not, you never know when inspired players can have a Devil Rays type season...

And would doh consider this success and having turned the program around? This guy is just setting the expectations low - and if by some miracle we finish in 5th place, then he will be the greatest coach ever

I've got a buddy from A&M who says Gillespie was very active in this arena

What do you expect? That we could bring in another coach and all of a sudden we are C-USA champs next year? I think after finishing 12th this year, a top 5 finish next year would be great progress and a definite step back to where we need to be, regardless of who the coach is.

Finishing 5th is a lofty goal that and I will be very impressed if he pulled it off.

How can Gillispie be out? How can that be a rumor? I saw him on the bench on Monday when Kentucky played at Creighton.

The buyout for Gillespie would be huge. He'd probably want to sit a year just to collect the buyout check.

True about your last sentence but Gillispie has proven that he can build a program, take a loser to a winner and do it quick -- at Texas A&M and UTEP -- and recruit the hell out of Dallas and the state of Texas in the process. Doh hasn't proven that.

I'd rather have a coach that can build a program and win at this level than a guy who is good at blogging and PR. The PR stuff wears out when you don't put a winning product on the floor -- think that is becoming the case with Doh.

Regardless, Doh isn't getting replaced this offseason and while Gillespie may get canned, SMU isn't going to hire him.
