Moody Renovations

Postby Stallion » Thu Mar 19, 2009 3:34 pm

I'm not sure what the status of discussions concerning renovating Moody. But if you were making the decision what would like to see. Interesting thread below has pictures of just about every major Areana in the Country-and is a good source for ideas. What I like to see done is a complete interior redesign-keep the facade and the shell but make the interior architecture, colors and markings uniform throught. One solid uniform color for the entire arena-preferrably blue with maybe very secondary markings of red-for example a Red Mustang. Right now I bet there a 5 different colors of blue visible throughout the areana. Not a big fan of the floor as presently done-solid colors are best.

I hope we maintain the very verical, cramped feel. On the rare occasion moody is full, it makes a wonderful environment compared to the spaced out, open modern designs.

I would like wider concourses, wider seats to accommodate my fat [deleted], and the blue chairs moved to the back in luxury suites or something so that in the event we begin to draw decent crowds, the persons right by the court are of the variety that are more likely to stand up and cheer their respective heads off.
The donkey's name is Kiki.

On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney?

Good, Bad...I'm the one with the gun.

Stallion, if you had typed "areana" only once, I could have given you a pass, but since you typed it twice:

What exactly is an areana?

Duke despite lots of temptation has while renovating Cameron, has resisted the temptation to cause it to lose that which is Cameron, the cozy feel and the students basically in the players laps. Moody is a 1950's arena, and it needs to be upgraded to some degree, but not dramatically. Given the size of our crowds, we don't need the AA Arena 2. It would be that much more embarrassing. Keep it intact, but spruce it up a bit. On the other hand, Maryland went whole hog in dumping Cole Field House and moving to the modern Comcast Center, but they've had something like 200 straight sell-outs. And Navy built a new gym which is not only small but pretty generic and not very appealing. So, keep Moody friendly to us, bad to opponents. And if you can figure out how to secretly tighten the rims each half at the baskets opponents are shooting at, that would be ideal.

The Pit @ University of New Mexico is a great home court advantage & one of my faves.

Someone alluded to this earlier...

We need to put the blue "premium" seats behind the players benches and put the students courtside where the blue seats are now. Makes for a much more intimidating atmosphere...now if we can just get some students to come out and watch.

Also, the space behind the basket closest to the Crum Center which is just empty is pretty bush league. Put the band there and students/premium seats behind the other basket.

Oh, and the new floor sucks. The wood is way too dark. And like Stallion said, a uniform blue throughout the building, please.

And on down the road, let's get a scoreboard/videoboard that isn't circa 1996.

The vintage game photos of SMU Coliseum (later named Moody after they forked over bail out money) are interesting in that there is no floor seating. Wonder if floor seating (pull outs) was in the original plan? I know there was only concrete to sit on in the east end - tickets were 50 cents to sit there. The battleship gray paint job along the seating area was pretty mundane, too. I know there was shortage of $$ when they got to the end - hence, the Moody name.

I agree with all of your recommendations except our floor. I wouldn't trade it for anybody else's floor. A classic beauty.

We just got that new scoreboard last year. I don't think it's that bad.

I'd settle for game presentation that wasn't circa 1976.

How about something simple like a mens basketball team with a winning record?
