Haynes to SMU

Postby Mike Damone » Sat Jan 31, 2004 2:11 am

Tonight David Haynes decided to honor his committment to SMU and turn down Arkansas. I think we got a good one.

No official report from the Insiders or Rivals but it does appear that way from reading the titles on the Arkansas Insiders' message board(restricted content) including posts by some of their inside posters. I think "Dudley" who reported it may be their "Guru". Congrats if true-hopefully with recruits like Haynes and Lindley along with the returning CBs we will soon be able to play the more agressive man to man style which is a Bennett trademark. We also have good numbers at the cover positions which should help us with better depth against the 3 and 4 wideout passing offenses as well as on special teams.

Without ever having seen this guy play, this is terrific news. A guy has a chance to back out of a commitment and go to an SEC team, and he stays committed? I also heard Houston Nutt visited him this week, to push him toward Fayetteville, and he held firm. His commitment to SMU is a nice tribute to his parents -- you make a commitment, you keep that commitment.

Due to a depleted secondary, Arkansas was going to give him the opportunity to start in the SEC next year. You have to be impressed that they thought that highly of him and that he decided to stay with us.

He wouldn't have started, no way....They are losing a lot, but still have enough to not start a freshmen corner....He is a great pickup though....

If Dudley Dawson said Haynes is going to SMU then Haynes is going to SMU. Dawson is definitely on the inside of the sports news.

It was confirmed by quotes from Haynes this morning in an Arkansas newspaper I saw.

Let's hope you're right. I talked to a friend of mine who used to be an assistant editor at Hawgs Illustrated magazine, and he said Dudley is a nice guy who knows everyone up there, but that he's not what you call an investigative reporter, but rather a guy who waits to get told about things. I'm not questioning his accuracy on this, just suggesting that someone else probably confirmed it first. Who knows. And as long as Haynes is coming to SMU, who cares?
