Spiro, I love it. An atheist is a guy who watches a Notre Dame-SMU football game and
doesn't care who wins. -- Dwight D. Eisenhower
Looks like Calipari will be Kentucky's target but is anyone hearing any talk of Travis Ford as a dark horse in this race?
From what I have heard, which is basically nothing, Calipari knows what he has in Memphis and has no desire to go. He has an easy conference, recruits the top athletes in the country with little if any restrictions, competes for the NC most years, etc. Why would he want the pressure cooker of Kentucky. I realize that egos and pride are invovled but common sense comes into play sometimes also. Only factor I could see would be money and I imagine he makes a lot now with an unlimited tenure while knowing he could be axed on a whim at Kentucky.
BTW, I will repeat that Pelphrey could be a dark horse also even though he says he is dedicated to Arkansas at this time. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Calipari would be stupid to bolt for Memphis. Right now he coaches a school that enables him to maximize his win total yearly. At Memphis he wins 30+ games every year whereas at Kentucky he will be lucky to average 25 wins. If for some reason he has a down year and wins 22 games at Kentucky he gets axed. Memphis fills its stadium. He has no limit on recruiting any player in the country at Memphis, and while it has been a solid program in the past, he can really leave a tremendous legacy at Memphis given that they really haven't won any championships. He has already moved around a lot and so sticking around a long time at Memphis would definitely enhance his legacy. Only money could sway him, which is always a factor, but with his wallet he would have to be very greedy!
At Memphis Calipiri will rack up wins and if he gets that NC he'll be up there with Wooden, Thompson, and Boeheim as great coaches who stayed with a program and just was a great coach. If he moves to Kentucky, he might succeed, or he might go the way of Rollie Massimino who left Villanova to go to UNLV and now sits a Villanova games wondering why he's not on the sidelines.
