JJT: SMU should call Gillispie to rescue dormant program

I have been beating the "Doherty is not going anywhere" drum since before the season started. That being said, SMU is going to have a decision to make after next season. And while Gillispie makes perfect sense "possibly next year", I am willing to bet you "next year", Houston will be looking for a new coach, too.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

any of us could have written that dribble...typical JJT... it's most of the things we have reiterated here for 3 years...

at least we'll probably be on the front page tomorrow :)

Interesting. Do you envision Penders getting canned or walking away?

Personally, I want to see Coach Doherty right the ship. If he leaves, either by his choice or Orsini's, I don't think Gillispie is a good fit at SMU. Personality, etc.

Hopefully UH makes the dance next season, which is now a very real possibility with the departure of Calipari. Memphis loses 2 seniors and Tyreke Evans from their starting lineup and will now have a hard time finding replacements of their caliber. Whoever they get to fill in will have to adjust to the players available to him, Meanwhile Houston returns their best team during CTP's tenure. I really think that CUSA could be a 2-bid league next season thanks to more balance. Anyway, we want UH to do well because CTP is not going anywhere unless he is fired and the less competition there is for Gillispie the better for SMU. I do hope that next year SMU makes a big jump to playing .500 ball or better.

Nobody here has said let's try to get Gillispie for 3 years. Everything Taylor said is true. The only question is whether Orsini will have the balls enough to concede that "his guy" didn't cut it.

I'm talking about the rest of the items in the column, not Gillespie

Well if everyone here has been talking about this stuff for 3 years, chances are int's not just "dribble," or drivel as you meant to say. He's done some nice things off-court, but Doherty's been a complete failure on the court and it's time to move on.

No surprise to hear this from me but I thought it was a good article by Jean-Jacq & I agree with everything he said 100%.
Nice to see SMU @ the top of the sportspage.

Gillespie is morally and ethically impaired, not to mention a drunk. Good choice fellas & JJT

If you want a sunday school teacher, then he is not your first choice.

If you want a head basketball coach, he fits well and can win.

Coaching is not a morally rich profession. It is ALL about w's.

Keep your east coast bias to yourself & go help Maryland find a pg :) .
Based on your comments above I'm convinced he's the perfect fit.

First, I have no problem if UH wants to get into a bidding war with us for any coach. I suspect we have the resources to hire whomever Orsini thinks can do the job. Second, Gillespie has a year or two of trying to get paid ahead of him and will not be able to focus on coaching. He will be suing UK for his severance package, I suspect, and since he didn't sign his contract, UK will be vigorously defending it. So, I don't want him around until that's resolved. Depositions have a funny way of being leaked and we don't need a day by day revelation of all the Billy stories coming out if he's our coach. We'll have plenty of entertainment of our own in the Vodicka mess. Lastly, Doh should get the 4th year just to give him a shot at having 3 years with his own recruits. If there is meaningful improvement (@ .500 in CUSA) and if we have a another cupcake OOC schedule, the we should win 75% of those games. That would translate into a 18 win season next year. Less than that, he should be gone. With a depleted Memphis squad, the conference tournament should decide the lone place at the dance, so a team that gets competitive by the end of the season should have a chance to dance.

His BEST year was with Tubbs' recruits. I've seen enough.

I've admittedly stepped away from the bball scene for the duration of the Doherty era, so this is a sincere question:

What/who are we exactly banking on to deliver us from these 10-12 win seasons? Which players and/or recruits are arriving that are going to change these things? I'm truly curious because I'm not in the loop.

And no, I'm not being facetious. If I want to be a smart ace I tend to just be upfront about it. :)
