Who gets Memphis job?

Postby PonyPower » Wed Apr 01, 2009 12:34 am

I had heard Mizzou's Mike Anderson might consider an offer, but he re-upped with a long-term deal in Columbia.

UTEP's Tony Bartee is an ex-Calipari assistant. Not exactly a marquee name, but he knows Memphis and would teach the same system.

Andy Katz threw out USC's Tim Floyd and Xavier's Sean Miller -- but he thought it would be tough to get Miller.

I'm not sure I wouldn't go low profile and develop my own Calipari...see Pastner. I despise the idea of him or Gillespie ending up at Houston

Why would Floyd ever want to leave USC?

Will probably here Miller's name for all the big openings like Georgia & Arizona.

If I were them, I would try to hire Travis Ford away from Oklahoma State.

Good choice. Plan B if Cal didn't take the UK job.

Yeah. My plan B for Memphis would be Brad Stevens at Butler.

Another good choice. Would Reggie Theus be a fit?

I would bring him in for an interview, and talk to him about what sort of process he underwent at NMSU to rebuild that program. I'd probably ask him what he would have done to sustain that high-level of play should he have stayed there instead of leaving for Sacramento.

If those questions were answered well, I'd pencil him in on the shortlist.

I don't think Memphis fans want him, though. I'm not sure why...he's a good coach. I knew someone who worked in the NMSU athletic dept for a couple years when Theus was the coach there; he was convinced that Theus was the best coach in the country.

Other than Money and some nice facilities, is Memphis really a step up from any other Power Conference School? They have had recent success and a bit of previous success, but they still have no National Championships....I just don't see it as a dream job like all the memphis faithful on their boards seem to think it is.

They are really high on Drew and seem to think that Memphis is a step up from Baylor. Baylor is in the Big 12, it is a private school with deep pockets and I just don't see Drew being interested. He has a great gig and is building a great program down in Waco.

Maybe I am wrong but I think they are going to have to settle for a has been or someone with baggage, or an up and comer in a non power conference...I just don't see them snagging someone else's top coach from a Power Conference/team like the Memphis fans seem to think they can do.

Memphis has deeper pockets, better facilities, and an easier city to recruit to than Baylor has. I've thought from the beginning that Scott Drew would be interested in the Memphis job. That might be Memphis' only chance to snag John Wall, too.

I'd have him on my list as perhaps a plan C or D, with Travis Ford being Plan A and Brad Stevens being plan B. If they could convince Sean Miller to leave Xavier for Memphis, he would be a good choice as well.
