I could believe that...Looks like the Fed Ex boys behind Memphis are going to throw some serious money out there, they are even contacting Pitino...
Sounds like they want to offer an established coach money that would make them the highest paid coach in the country, bound to get quite a bit of interest. Must be nice when most of the Executives of FED-EX are Memhis alums... Womack + Wishbone = Heisman

Scott Drew seems to be gaining steam, however, they are hindered by the fact that Baylor is still playing in the NIT, would have to wait till after tomorrow to "officially" talk to him....
In my opinion, Drew would be the best hire they could get, hes young, energetic, knows how to work around the grey areas of recruiting....In fact, he is a Calipari clone. However, I think he likes it at Baylor and feels loyalty to them for bringing him to the big time and sticking with him through the lean years.... I could see him coming right out and saying he is not interested, but if he did talk to them, I imagine Baylor would match or increase any offer he would get and he would probably stay in Waco. I just don't see Memphis as a step up from Baylor. Womack + Wishbone = Heisman

I disagree. Memphis Tiger BB is the signature sport in that town. The Grizzlies can't touch it. Calipari has raised the profile of the program and the history of the school with its bb tradition and 3 Final Fours that I know of make it very attractive. Plus, he has more to sell as the big fish in the little pond of CUSA -- if the successor can keep it going and get great recruits. And we know Drew can recruit. If you're in the conversation for John Wall, that's saying something. Baylor is a stepping stone job. Memphis has more appeal, IMO.
Since when is there loyalty in D-I sports?
But Memphis' problem is that it's stuck. It has wanted to get into the Big East. However, at 16 teams in that conference, it makes it a little difficult. Theoretically, you could have them replace DePaul if the Blue Demons continue to really stink. But the Big East would have to think hard about giving up the Chicago Market. Outside of the Big East, I'm having difficulty thinking of where it could go.
The other issue is Football. If Memphis was going to move to the Big East, I'm sure they would want Football to move with it. Doubt the Big East is interested, if that's the case.
That would be funny to see Calipari's status as the highest paid coach in America only last a week or two. And I think the CFO of FedEx is actually head of the Memphis booster club, so yeah there's some big money available. Also, Georgie boy is correct about Tigers BB being #1 in Memphis. Having gone to the tourney there once, it was unbelievable the atmosphere they had. It would rival any pro team.
Those are good points about Memphis College basketball being the rock stars of the town and playing in the FED-EX Forum and those are certainly things to consider.
I see Memphis as being stuck in C-USA unless everything implodes again at some point and there is mass movement. I don't see the BE booting anyone in basketball and I don't see Memphis wanting to make their football team an independent just for basketball's sake and no way would the BE want both basketball and football. They are stuck in C-USA with the rest of us....and I see that as a huge detractor from any big name coach. To me, if Drew could make the same money or better at Baylor, I just don't see him moving to a non power conference after competing with the big boys. Womack + Wishbone = Heisman

They are going after the wrong guys. They need to go after Travis Ford, Brad Stevens, Reggie Theus, Sean Miller, Scott Drew.
