J.T. Brooks: ABILITY TO ADJUST

Postby PonyPride » Mon Apr 13, 2009 10:05 pm

Most athletes have to make adjustments when they advance to the next level of competition. Some have to get stronger, some have to get leaner. Some learn new positions, while many have to learn new responsibilities as they operate in a new offensive or defensive scheme.

J.T. Brooks, who will be a redshirt sophomore in the fall, has had to make changes in each of those areas. A former Wishbone guard who played in a four-point stance in high school, Brooks is now the leading candidate to take over the starting right tackle spot in SMU's Run-and-Shoot offense, a system that requires its linemen to play in an upright, two-point stance.

Brooks visited with PonyFans.com to discuss the adjustments he has made on and off the field, and what offensive line coach Dennis McKnight expects from all of the Mustangs' blockers.

It's nice to actually see some beef on the line. With Brooks and Lereibus we at least have two 300+ guys on the line at a time. I'd still like to see us average 300 across the front with the exception of possibly the center (for mobility measures).
Those who complain about a problem are simply wasting time they could use to fix it.

Potential is nothing, performance is everything.

Nice story Pride.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

I agree. I know coaches say it's more important to be athletic than huge, but look at the lines they had at Hawaii - all of them were 300 and above, weren't they? I think Tennison is nearly 300 pounds, and Nwangwu and Free have to be in that range, too.

Thanks for all your work, guys

The "Biggin's" that we've got on the Roster today as OL, are (with "listed weights":

J.T. Brooks 6-5 312
J. LeRibeus 6-3 330
S. Nwangwu 6-4 320

Honorable Mention:
Jordan Free 6-2 294
Kelly Turner 6-3 293

Sure, weight isn't everthing, but if the emphasis is on body composition, then it should be "Good weight" you would think.
