June Jones ranked as #5 coach among non-BCS schools

Postby GeorgiaMustang » Tue Apr 14, 2009 9:25 am

Rivals ranks JJ as the #5 non-BCS coach in the country.

Ranking the non-Big Six coaches:

(NOTE: New coaches are denoted by an asterisk.)

1. Kyle Whittingham, Utah. A brilliant defensive mind who has helped build the Utes into the premier non-"Big Six" program.

2 Gary Patterson, TCU. The only thing missing from his résumé is a BCS bowl. And it'll come if he stays long enough.

3. Chris Petersen, Boise State. Unlike Houston Nutt, Dirk Koetter and Dan Hawkins, Petersen looks firmly rooted in Boise.

4. Troy Calhoun, Air Force. The next stop for this wunderkind ? Back to the NFL.

5. June Jones, SMU. He's about to make SMU relevant again.

I hope they're right. If he can really do that, he should be No. 1.
I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.

Relevance is a relevant term . . . would 6-6 be relevant . . . or 4-8? or 7-5? Bowl game? . . . which makes us relevant again?

I think 7-5 and a bowl game makes us relevant again. Thoughts?
Sports, and all that implies.

54. Todd Dodge, North Texas. His first two seasons at UNT have been a struggle for the former Texas prep coach.

I would say that 7-5 and a bowl certainly marks a milestone on SMU's return to relevance but I think it more that SMU needs to compete for the CUSA championship and THEN go bowling.

We have been 6-6 in the last few years, and while that would probably put us in a bowl now, I don't think that is enough to make us "relevant" again.

That said, I'll still be at ANY bowl game we get into, when that happens.

Surprised Turner Gill is ranked so low. If you can win a conference title at Buffalo....

21. Charlie Weis, Notre Dame. He is proof that college football is much
more than Xs and Os. It's make-or-break time for Weis.

Funny that Notre Dame is considered non Big 6.
