Postby Pony4Life » Wed Feb 11, 2004 9:00 am

The weekly Park Cities section of the Dallas Morning News is reporting that Highland Park DB James Klein -- a first-team All District 12-4A honoree -- is thinking of walking on at SMU.

Big Men?

If Bus says it, it must mean big men.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Didn't it also say that HPs star running back Jack Galivan might attend SMU but hasnt considered playing football beyond high school. He'd be a quality walk on if he can be convinced to come out.

How big or fast is he? Would he be a walk-on who might actually play one day?
I'm eager to learn about BUS's surprises.

Nope, not yet. Have to wait on some things to get ironed/straightened out.

And another thing, this is not a for sure thing, just a maybe. So the surprise label should fit.

Rumors are quite fun!!!!

The wait will last until mid to late May. That is a big hint.

I assume that means we're looking at a JUCO lineman. Sure could use another huge DT in the rotation. Now I'm going to be disappointed if it doesn't happen.

Walk-ons Bring it on!

Postby Bo 17 » Thu Feb 26, 2004 4:03 pm

A note to all walk-ons or anyone considering walking on at SMU. IT CAN BE DONE!

In 1986 I walked on at SMU after being passed over by all other schools, not even 1 scholarship offer. I ran for 1400 yards as a senior and was the District 12-5A Offensive Player of the year for JJ Pearce. (12-5A: Plano, Plano East, Lake Highlands, Berkner, Richardson, RL Turner & Nimitz)

I ended up being the only true freshman starter that year at 5'8 and 165 lbs. soaking wet. I contributed on kick-off coverage, punt coverage & kick-off return and earned Special Teams player of the week against T Tech and was voted special teams captain for UT game. That was the year of the DP.

The following year I turned down scholarship offers from other schools to walk-on at the University of Georgia and ended up being their staritng punt and kick-off returner in 1987 and won the Olin Huff Outstanding walk-on athlete of the year at UGA.

In 1988 I decided to return to the hilltop with Romo and the boys and by the time I decided all the scholarships were gone. I spent 1988 and 1989 as a walk-on! In 1990 my senior year, Coach Gregg finally offered me a scholarship!

My point here is that if you still have the passion and you work your [deleted] off and walk-on you can get into the starting line up. My advice...do not listen to others, stay focused on job at hand, set goal to play immediately, never be satisfied with just being on the team and whenever possible knock someone on their [deleted]!!!!! Work Hard walk-ons!!!

Walk - On's ?

Postby SMUFinns » Fri Mar 05, 2004 10:19 am

Bo 17,

How were you treated ( By coaches / Players ) as a Walk On and was it any better or worse when you took a starters role over a ship player.
By all accounts Walk On are frowned upon by players and some coaches, mainly because a walk on might show that he could take a scholarship players spot and the recruiting coach feels that his recruits should be given that spot.
This is understandable, however if the team / coaches want to win and sees that a Walk On can contribute rather than closing ranks and giving the Walk On a hard time, which BTW might just spur the Walk On to play harder and put the ship / coaches in a worse position.

How many players can be on the roster ? it seams that some schools have as many as 120 players listed.

TAPPS 5A Champions Bishop Lynch's ( M-James ) - All Star - All State - All District in two sports (FB & Soccer) DB/WR/ST, 5-10 - 170 - 4.45 is considering attending SMU and Walking On, this may change since the cancellation of the men's track program announcement. He's also a good all round track athlete, sprints & jumps.

Was not Wes Hopkins a walk on back in 1980. The story goes... How fast do you run a 40? I dont know. Oh 4.4 or 4.5.

Speaking of walk-ons...keep an eye on Zac Sledge this year. He has a real shot to play and maybe play a lot. The coaches really like him.
