The Pistol Returns

Postby 03Mustang » Sat Apr 25, 2009 11:57 pm

From Kate's DMN article....

Another option: SMU has placed more importance this spring on the Pistol formation, in which the quarterback lines up closer to the center than in the traditional shotgun. The running back is 4 yards directly behind the quarterback. Jones said SMU will run and pass out of the Pistol.

Coach Jones talked quite a bit about the Pistol formation after the Red/Blue game. He said the slight shift in the quarterback's position shouldn't affect the passing game too much, but said he really likes "some of the angles" the formation allows to create space and running lanes in an effort to boost the running game.

If you want to look at tape on JJ's version of the pistol offense, check out the Fresno State vs. Hawaii game from 2007. Fresno State was surprised when Hawaii used the pistol offense against them, and it was VERY effective. 410 yards passing AND 137 yards rushing (most rushing yards against a D-IA opponent that season). From what I can remember, that was the only game that JJ used the pistol while he was at Hawaii.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Pistol that some good offensive lineman and great RBs can't fix. Many people on here have reacted negatively to the Pistol because we didn't have the personnel to effectively run the offense. Chris Ault at Nevada invented the thing and has had great success with it. Put D.J. Jones and Shawnbray McNeil in the Pistol and it could be successful.

Hopefully we don't shoot ourselves with the "pistol" like we did towards the end of the Phil "I've forgotten more footall than all of you will ever know" Bennett era.

JJ used the pistol for one game against one of the tougher conference opponents for Hawaii and got 547 yards of offense in the game. Hawaii could have gotten more but one of Tom Mason's LBs knocked Colt Brennan out of the game with a concussion on a play where he was well out of the pocket and didn't see the LB coming.

Maybe one of the reasons we got Coach Mason.
