SMU Great Richard Bartel

Postby ponydawg » Thu May 07, 2009 1:14 pm

Bartel beat out TT Graham Harrell........not really, but....

"The staff felt Harrell, who participated in rookie camp on a tryout basis, picked up the system quickly and has great potential, the source said. However, the team let him leave town without a contract, in part because it currently has four quarterbacks on the roster: Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson, Brett Ratliff and Richard Bartel."

Bartel is the best QB on that roster. Discuss amongst yourselves.

I wouldn't mind it if we completely disassociate Bartel from SMU. From what I remember of the guy, he was an arrogant hothead. After picking a fight with the Intramural Director for not letting him play IM Football, he transferred.

I always end up comparing him to Josh McCown, who seemed to be a good teammate and an even better guy before getting completely screwed by Cavan.

Bartel always seemed like a jerk, no?

I don't know any about that or him. But I do remember leaving this game with hope.....boy am I a sucker. You'd think I'd catch on sooner or later.

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Richard Bartel passed for 296 yards and
three touchdowns to help Southern Methodist earn its first win
of the season, a 37-34 Western Athletic Conference victory over
Louisiana Tech.

Bartel, who completed 21-of-30 passes, clinched the win with an
84-yard TD strike to Cody Cardwell that made it 37-26 with just
over six minutes remaining.

The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Mustangs
(1-7, 1-3 WAC) dating to last season. In its first seven games
this year, SMU surpassed 20 points just once.

Bartel got ran off by the staff for a relatively minor event in the world of college athletics- McCown quit on his own teammates even though he was starting. He wasn't treated badly by SMU Coaches-he performed abonminally including about 8 turnovers in the last two games before he sat. Even then he became the starter again by the end of the season and would have started his Senior year. McClown is a quitter and always will be a quitter and he is not a Mustang-his diploma says Sam Houston State Monument. Would you call your ex-wife your wife? He divorced SMU not the other way around.

bartel was the slap [deleted] of all slap dicks... playing intramural football was more important to him then playing division 1 football... every week it was the same thing. he would have an emotional breakdown on the field/in the lockerroom, and would then come in sunday morning and apologize to the team for his behavior and then read a bible verse....
then bartel goes to tartleton, and during the spring game throws his helmet at a defensive lineman for a late "hit"... sounds like the kind of leader/team player you want

edit: i should have put more emphasis on Bartel playing intraural football... [deleted] ridiculous

Bartell, Saunders, McCown....three QBs who transfered from SMU within a 8 year period who made it to the NFL. Safe to say that will not happen with June Jones. Progress.....thank god

I sat next to him in the locker room. He is, was, and will always be and will always be spoiled, arrogant, and a selfish player.
