Jimmy Tubbs Passed Away This Morning

Postby 50's PONY » Sat May 09, 2009 3:53 pm

Just received word that Jimmy passed away this morning. Don't know any of the details but this is very sad. Jimmy was a fine man, a good friend, and he loved SMU very much. He will be missed greatly. Please pray for Jimmy's family during this difficult time. Rest in peace my friend.

Jimmy Tubbs, the former head coach at SMU and Dallas Kimball High School, died on Saturday.

Causes of death are unknown. He was 60.

Tubbs became SMU's 15th head coach in 2004. He was fired in 2006 after a 13-16 season. He compiled a 27-30 record with the Mustangs.

Tubbs, in addition, spent 12 seasons as an SMU assistant and two more as an assistant at Oklahoma. Tubbs also led Kimball to a UIL Class 5A state championship in 1990.

Tubbs in 2003 was named one of CollegeInsider.com's 50 most eligible bachelors of college basketball.

Wow, that's just awful. He seemed like a very decent man
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones

Friend of mine told me Tubbs had been dealing with some blood pressure problems lately. He said that Tubbs was not feeling well Friday and went to the hospital.

I'm sure someone with better knowledge can shed more light, but that's what I was told.

Just shocked more than anything else. Never heard through the grapevine his health was poor.

He was a man that pushed hard. The BP issue is hard to deal with if you can not slow down and relax.

Jimmy T. Loved the Mustangs and is a good man that can relax in the grace of GOD.

Peace be with you always in the gift of the holy ghost.

Probably a lesson there for many of us, regardless of age. At some point, I guess you need to relax. i'll work on it for sure. Jimmy Tubbs died way too young.

I will miss him.

Coach was an assistant when I was there from 1990 on....he was a great guy. He always had hypertension problems, had to watch his salt intake and one time when he was accidentally hit in the head with an errant pass he really was in pain.

His dream was always to coach SMU and I felt bad with what happened. If anyone founds out details on services please post here....

Greg, this is Jon Embree. I spoke to Hamilton yesterday, and he said that plans for the service had not been made yet, but when a time is set I'll let you know.
