This thread with it's photos is most interesting. To correct a few misconceptions, it was earlier stated that Bill Meek was good with Xs and Os but not a good recruiter. On the contrary, Meek and his staff were horrible at coaching football and motivating players but the recruiting during the early part of his career at SMU was spectacular, whether due to Meek, Sleepy or alumni. If memeory serves, SMU began to get crossways with the NCAA during the Meek period. As a matter of fact, the talent at SMU, during part of the Meek and Woodard periods was probably as good, comparatively speaking, as at any time in the history of Mustang football.

It appears our history, like probably many other programs, is a big list of "what ifs" footnotes. It's sad b/c that 50's era was right off the momentum of the 30's & 40's & never, ever recovered during & after the Meek's years except for a few blurbs along the way.

LeVias is a class act. He described some of his challenges at SMU with humility and humor. He dealt with some very unpleasant realities of the time with humor and respect. If one wants to truly understand the grace of this man, then take the opportunity to listen to his tale if possible.

Ball regaled the crowd with a tale of how he humiliated Jackie Sherrill. One loves to hear it when a Pony gigs an Aggie.

Revis gave a fine weather report about Dallas in the summer of 1980 from a California boy’s perspective and how even slow guys have their day.

Fox just talked about his mommy and some very upset elderly Longhorn woman in a van.

Kenny Hand has an incredible knowledge of SMU football history and is very entertaining in his presentation.

Orsini, though not pictured, was there as well and gave a brief but optimistic report for the coming year. It was tempered by a hint of patience that fans will continue to employ.

It was a fun evening and one I was happy to attend. I hope Mustang fans in other parts of the country can get former athletes together for some of their stories.

Oh, and the evening ended in truly classy SMU fashion with one of the speakers demonstrating a new Longhorn hand sign displayed towards the Mustangs long ago.

Another couple of observations about comments made on this thread and these are just my opinions, although I think, informed opinions. Someone made an unkind reference to Sherwood Blount. To glory in the success of the late 70s and early 80s and say things negative about Blount is, to me, hypocrisy. Sherwood, along with others, never did anything that SMU did not want him to do. If SMU did not approve of what was going on they could have stopped it. In those times, furthermore, I sincerely doubt SMU was doing anything that the rest of the SWC was not also doing. On another subject, Dave Smith, according to one poster was responsible for the beginning of the cheating at SMU which culminated later. I disagree vehemently. I have already pointed out that we were dinged by the NCAA during the Meek period. We were dinged during the Fry period also and I know there were "sugar daddies" who were helping players with extra benefits during the Fry era, just as there were at other schools. Dave Smith is a fine man. I knew him as an assistant at a small college where he was my coach, knew him as an assistant at SMU, knew him as head coach and know him today as a friend. He is one of the few head coaches in the history of SMU football to have a winning record. He had a winning record at Ok State and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers had a winning record when he was an assistant there. When he was an assistant at SMU, many of the players thought highly of him and he was responsible for recruiting many good players for SMU. Unfortunately he tried to sever a long time relationship with a "sugar daddie" at SMU after Dave became the head coach and trouble arose from that. I have been close friends with many coaches who associated with Dave Smith as friends and coaches and they all have vast respect for him as a coach and a man.

Particularly well said about Blount & the rest of the SWC doing the same.

One thing about Dave Smith - those Buckeye-styled helmets he started were an embarrassment. I know he was a good man but GEEE!!! Do you know why he started that? We had such great helmets prior to & he changed it, I guess you could say, permanently.

As for the NCAA, it has been & is one of the most hypocritical organizations on the face of the earth.

I echo the good sentiments about Dave Smith. When I was given the opportunity to coach the redshirts as a student assistant, I was under the watch Of Coach Smith who was offensive line coach at the time. He also lived a couple of blocks from my folks who had been transferred to Dallas and lived in Richardson and I would often stop on the way to their house and visit with him. One of my all time favorite people. He was definitely a players coach.
