I know many of these scenarios are unlikely, but we've all thought about it. If SMU were to improve over the next few years, what's the most realistic way you would create a new conference for SMU.
Lets be honest, Conference USA is good for us now, but if we were to get better the competition is really not that fun to watch. In a perfect world...
Tulane : New Orleans (market) / Academics
Rice: Houston (market) / Academics
SMU: Dallas (market) / Academics
Memphis – market / Basketball
Temple – Philadelphia (market) / Basketball
Notre Dame – Football / Basketball
UTAH – Football / Basketball
Boise St. – Football / Basketball

First off Notre Dame would never agree to be in a such awful conference. Other then maybe Boise state and Utah there is no team to attract television ratings. Remeber Notre Dame is still under contract with NBC.

You think TX, Baylor, TT & aTm would give up that Big 12 revenue? Please. Put the pipe down.

Gee...that sounds vaguely familiar.
.
BTW a really like that idea, but I gave up on fantasies a long time ago.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

I know these scenarios are wacky, but its always nice to hope because throughout history there have been monumental conference changes. While Pac-10, Big 12, etc are all pretty set, there are some solid teams in potentially volatile conferences (Utah, Boise St. etc.). I just graduated and I am huge sports fan, so it's kind of a "buzz kill" to watch ESPN and see the action then go to one of our games and see our competition.
I know the conference fits us now, but I really hope with June Jones we can grow out of Conference USA. Just look at the recruiting difference already, these legit kids seem to like us. Conference USA just sounds lame, even the mascots are lame, sometimes I feel like we're playing the teams from the "Big Green"...early 90's childhood reference.

all academic conference
all private schools, all fairly close in proximity (wanted to include stanford).
smu
rice
tulane
wake forest
vanderbilt
duke
notre dame
univerity of richmond (bump up to 1A)
University of Miami
Boston College
Northwestern
Sure we would get waxed in basketball from the likes of WF, duke, miami, maybe bc...but nothing worse than what memphis does to us.
Football, we are on the rise and will be able to compete with the big boys soon!

Don't forget that Texas State has designs on being in Div. 1-A.
We know that SMU can beat them.

Why would Boise or Utah or Notre Dame get involved with this?
You are better off thinking SMU to the SEC to open up the Dallas media market if you want to go with pipedreams.
