Just not impressed with our recruiting efforts

Postby George S. Patton » Thu Jun 11, 2009 8:40 am

I've been a way for a little while and came back and read up on the new commitments.

I'm just having some issues with exactly what kind of impact the Jones staff is making. From what I can tell, it's about the same as the Bennett era and nothing more.

The only difference I see is that we're offering with the bigger boys now but I'm not really impressed with what I have seen so far.

Sorry you feel that way. I don't really care if Jones gives a flip on this opinion. Nor should he. Just calling it like I see it. Hope I'm wrong.

Well we have 10 commitments in early June....as I recall the last year of Bennett's tenure we landed our first commitment in early July, and I think it was Andrew Ellison. These players in this class also still have an entire season of football to showcase their respective talents and improve their stock as recruits.

I also like the higher-caliber lineman recruits that Jones has landed, as well as the Darius Johnson signing. It's not fair to compare them until they get on the field, because many of Bennett's higher-rated recruits didn't do, well, anything when they got here.

It's pretty clear that the number one roadblock is that Jones is peddling a shoddy product: one that has won 2 games over the last two calendar years, plays in a sub-par conference, doesn't play on national television regularly, hasn't had a winning season in a decade, and plays in a 35,000 seat stadium that is woefully attended; but everybody already knows all of that. If the team is able to win 4-6 games this year than Jones should have no problem getting higher profile talent to listen to SMU's pitch genuinely, and at that point we ought to know exactly what we've gotten.

I am actually impressed with the 10 commitments so far. These coaches have proven they can evaluate talent and have a proven winning system in place. I am curious to see what qb we get and if he can get another top rb and dl but overall I am excited with this group. I cannot wait until the season starts. This team should be much more competitive with the system in place for 1 year and most of the starters returning.

Also remember, JJ has said that at Hawaii he would only get 1 out of every 100 kid that also had a Pac 10 offer and look what he did with the talent he was able to get.....in his first partial recruiting year he landed several players with BCS offers. I also expect several of our current commitments will get more offers before its over. Again, I am impressed so far.

Jones has a great eye for talent that can play well in his system. At Hawaii, he never had players with a lot of offers but he had tremendous success on the field.

well said dwan.

Also, I'd like to ask the Hawaii fans out there...did you guys have many early commits while June was coaching?

I like this class. JJ knows how to evaluate talent. I would imagine he never had 10 commits in June at Hawaii. Basically all of his recruiting there was done by video. His first class he had 2 weeks to put together. his last class was the best SMU has had this decade in my opinion. Our OL recruits have all had other offers. All we need is a good QB, which it seems we will get this year.

JJ took over the worst program in the country. He also took over Bennetts recruits which were mainly 1-AA talent. This is not his fault. in 2011 we will go to a bowl! Look at Vandy. Didnt it take Bobby Johnson several years of poor records until he was finally able to do what he did last year.

Look at Rich Rod. He took over a team full of high 3 , 4 and 5 stars and got beat by toledo and had a close game with Miami (ohio) . I am sure he will turn it around once he gets the right guys in there and gives them ore time to learn his system. Just like JJ will.

If Leach had taken the Job at Washington or Tennessee i bet he would have had a 2 win season this next year. It just takes times. Especially with these complex systems. And especially when you have had a bottom 10 team for the last 20 years!!

JJ needs 3 years until he can be judged. You cant judge his progress when he is coaching the worst evaluator of talent ever's recruits, and all of his are 18 years old!

I think so far things are going well. Better than you would normally expect from a 1 win team but maybe not as good as June or we would like. That being said, we are bringing in some real athletic and fast kids. it will take time to see which 3* guys we end up getting but Im sure it will be a few more. Things still need to shake out a little more at the top.

As far as the numbers so far, there are a lot of other bcs programs which have 5 or less recruits including South Carolina and Georgia Tech. While they are going after mostly 3 and 4 star guys they have signed some guys with no stars by their name.

Im optimistic this class will be better than last year. it will however take WINS to take us up a notch from what June will be able to acomplish in recruiting this year.

Our last 4 verbals have a combined 2 offers. What is to be impressed by? Some of you should stop being homers and look at the lack of interest these kids are getting. Maybe they will end up w/a slew of offers, but until then, its lackluster on paper w/so-so video

Look, this is a pretty important year for the Jones program. There needs to be some measurable peformance in Ws for the recruiting to really catch some momentum.

I don't care if June Jones brought 4 national titles in his resume to SMU. That only lasts so long. Kids aren't stupid. They know we have stunk it up for the last couple of years at 2-22 and we are recruiting against our record first before we are recruiting against other CUSA or lower BCS teams.

Winning brings better players. It's that simple. Jones knows that.

There better be a leap this fall. Model or no model, if you don't show the improvement you aren't winning your fair share of the recruiting battles.

Sorry. My perception of this class outside of a couple is a big YAWN!
