This story/column proved revealed absolutely nothing. It was probably written way too soon for SMU -- not for somebody who has a pretty good history in recruiting -- before much more was known about the non-evaluated players.
That's great that we have 11. But what exactly do we have?
Since Josh opened with look out Big 12, TCU and Tulsa, let's look at that.
Go to the Rivals pages for TCU and Baylor. Some of their recruits are not rated as well, but look at who offered these guys. Then go back and look at who offered SMU's kids. Baylor just got a DB from West Texas who SMU offered. Great we knew and were on him but 1-11 SMU even with Jones on board, was not enough to overcome Big 12 Baylor.
Maybe Josh would be wise not to go that route because that statement looks pretty foolish.
Again, we're at a point in the recruiting process where whoever was going to be offered already has been offered and there's a reason why there are those who haven't been.
I'm no longer going to fall into this line of thinking that this staff is much smarter than any other because they found diamonds in the rough.
Win some head-to-head recruiting battles with TCU, Baylor and Tulsa (when those schools are known to have officially offered) and then I'll be a little more impressed.

George, I am not sure what has happened to you, but, your motive operandi has totally changed in the last month. Until recently, your main topic was Big 10 focused, now reading your post, it looks like you're doing a copy and paste of Stallion verbage. Is this the same Patton that refuses to join these recruiting services, that now stands back and claims "I'm just not impressed". Did I miss the memo that suddenly informs SMU staff, JJ, and his assistants, must get your approval? I must have missed your promotion. Peace, off to work now. Go Ponies and Fear June Jones!George S. Add JUCO DT Branden Warner to last year's recruiting class (if he actually signs with us after opting out of UCLA) and I am extremely happy with that class.
We need to go this route...4 star JC players with some sore of issues...DB Ryan Clark, Frazier, this Warner kid. Sprinkle in our usual 3 star HS recruits and you have the makings of some great recruiting classes.
IMHO.

That actually makes perfect sense. After 20 years in the desert, any water is good water I guess, so who can blame the sunshiners for lapping this stuff up. And I will say this, without commenting on the quality of the recruits (which I don't know or really care about until they hit the field in a Mustang uniform), I don't recall having this many commitments this early in a very long time.gostangs wrote:Because a person wandering in the desert dying of thrist doesn't examine the quality of the water when they hand him a canteen - they just drink it and are happy.
I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.

So you don't trust June Jones and his staff's judgementjtstang wrote:Why is the concept of quality vs. quantity lost on the average ponyfan?
on football players?
Is this "concept" you seem to know all about also lost on June Jones?
You think June Jones should just walk into the Tim Tebow's of the
world house and say "hey I am from SMU we've won 2 games in
two years....sign right here".
Are you guys in la-la land?
Do you know how hard our coaching staff is working, travelling by
car, plane, and train day and night all over the country trying to
secure diamonds in the rough just like they did at Hawaii.
Yeah it's sho easy to sit back on your fat azzes and say "well I'm
not impressed".....but June Jones has impressed alot of people over
his career that he knows football, that he knows how to build a
football team and I doubt many of you can say the same.
C-ya @ Milos!
I'll tell you what's changed it for me. We have a coaching staff that is being paid handsomely to produce results, recruit well and do what it takes to get this program competitive.ALEX LIFESON wrote:George, I am not sure what has happened to you, but, your motive operandi has totally changed in the last month. They need to start beating TCU, Tulsa, Baylor for some of these kids. So far, that hasn't happened in this newest cycle of recruiting.
I'm tired of listening to "You wait and see." "This is going to be great." "Told you June was going to do great things."
Whatever. All I've known is about 18 seasons of losing football, crappy coaching, crappy players and an athletic department that lacked leadership. And I still don't think we're out of the woods in any of those fields yet.
I'm not demanding a bowl this year. I've been saying about 4 wins will be this program's ceiling.
I renewed my season tickets for this year. I've reached a point where I am no longer going to accept what I see. Either this school's athletic department is going to get its act together or my future donations to SMU will go to other parts of the University.
BTW, The Golden Gophers new stadium's first game is 87 days away. I'm going to try and get up there for a game.
