I believe / hope Jones and staff know how to evaluate and determine what we need. As others have stated, including I believe Jones himself, getting some wins will help with recruiting.

We all know about Ryan Leaf --

It seems almost unbelievable now that some teams felt Leaf was better pro material than Peyton Manning. And adding insult to injury, Chargers GM Bobby Beathard gave up the No. 3 pick, a second-round selection, a first-round choice in 1999, and two players to Arizona to move up just one spot.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm not giving June Jones a pass on anything anymore.

He either makes significant strides with the program this year or I'm going to start to accuse him of coming here to steal money in the form of playing football coach.

Leaf, who resigned from West Texas A&M after being investigated for drug crimes in November, was working in British Columbia, his attorney said. Kelly, a former head football coach at the college, said Leaf "has been to rehab and successfully completed it."

Leaf, who coached for three seasons at West Texas A&M, spent four seasons in the NFL after being chosen with the No. 2 pick in the 1998 draft by the Chargers.

In his NFL career, which included stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Dallas Cowboys, Leaf had 14 touchdowns and 36 interceptions. He was better known for outbursts directed at teammates, coaches, fans and reporters.

Get real. He just implemented a new offense, run by an 18 year old and you expected something last year? Get out of here. If we win 1 game again next year- then yes, that is a disaster. But until that happens, give the guy a little time.

The ‘star’ system you speak of projects how players will perform on the college level, NOT the pro level.

Of course it is an imperfect science, but for you to offer up Ryan Leaf as an example of its imperfection is laughable.

Ryan Leaf, for all his short-comings as a professional ball player, for all his short-comings as a human being, was still the epitome of success as a college athlete.

The man came in 3rd in the Heisman voting the year Woodson won.

Pro or College, evaluation can be wrong and there can be a lot of people wrong as in Ryan Leafs case or any number of high school players coming into college.
There are also several under-the-radar that turn out to be very productive.
I was more focused on Jones ability to hopefully identify those.
