Conf. USA preview from Charleston Gazette

"UTEP will be tough to slot, but Southern Methodist might be tougher.
Keep a nervous eye on the Mustangs, who play at Marshall in the 11th game. Bo Levi Mitchell threw most of his 23 interceptions early in 2008, as new coach June Jones tossed the true freshman to the wolves. Mitchell will be a bunch better, and he has receivers to work with.

If a sieve-like defense of the past two seasons improves at all, do not be surprised if the Mustangs go from 1-11 to the Hawaii Bowl."

I worry about our defense.

Sieve-like defenders? We were that good the last two years?

Our defense doesn't need to be great — just better. There's not a great defense in C-USA, so if we can slow the bleeding and the offense picks up with a year of experience in the system, we can make significant improvement. Personally, I think a bowl game is a year away, but the improvement this year will be undeniable.

:

"Sieve-like" is a bit harsh. Porous is more palatable.

I was at the Navy game, sieve fit just fine. No passes thrown, only one or two punts by Navy the whole game. You can't win games if you can't tackle.

Hey Pocono Pony ! How can you come up with descriptions such as "sieve-like" and "porous"? This is Southern Methodist University and the correct term should be "Holy"

apparently "palatable" and "accurate" have widely different meanings.

We won't be going bowling this year but I fully expect us to win a few here and there. Anywhere between 4-8 and 6-6 is a significant step in the right direction. I'd love to be more optomistic than that but I just don't think we're going to be able to get off the field defensively.
Back off Warchild seriously.

Actually, we get off the field too quickly defensively. And they wave to the opposing extra point kicker as they leave the field.
