At the end of the 1947 season SMU had won the SWC Championship and Penn State had won the Lambert Trophy, emblematic of the Eastern Championship. At the end of the season SMU was ranked No. 3 in the nation and Penn State was ranked No. 4. Penn State wanted to go to the Sugar Bowl but did not receive an invitation because they now had two African-Americans, Dennie Hoggard and Wallace Triplett, on the team. Hoggard was an end and Triplett was a back and both were very good players.
After the Sugar Bowl Penn State tried for the Orange Bowl but received the same answer. Matty Bell then stepped in and asked the Cotton Bowl to invite Penn State and they did. No hotel in Dallas would accept the team so arrangements were made for the team to stay at the Dallas Naval Air Station. They were also forced to eat all of their meals there.
The Cotton Bowl seated 45,507 (before upper decks were added) and the game was a sold out quickly. Cotton Bowl officials said they could have sold 100,000 seats if they had been available.
The Mustangs were led by All America Doak Walker and the Nittany Lions were led by their All America Steve Suhey.
SMU dominated the first half featuring a long touchdown pass from Walker to Paul Page. Penn State dominated the second half and the game ended up in a 13-13 tie. I had the good fortune of being there with my parents.
After the game both teams showered and loaded on buses and came to the SMU Campus and had dinner together at the SMU Student Center which was then located right across the street from Atkins Hall (now Clements Hall). Heritage Hall has many pictures of the game and the dinner online at www.athletichistory.com.
This past week, out of the clear blue, we have acquired the complete radio broadcast of the game. It is the ONLY, I repeat ONLY, complete game broadcast of one of Doak's games. And even more exciting is the fact that the broadcaster is the great Kern Tips. We have always had the film of the game and this is a major find for Heritage Hall.
For those of you who read this you can obtain the radio broadcast on a CD for $20.00 plus $2.00 postage. Simply email me at ([email protected]) and give me your name and address and I will get one in the mail to you. You can just send me a check after you receive it. When we put it online the cost will be $25.00.
Happy July 4th. and thanks for supporting SMU Heritage Hall.
