So where does USC fit here? If this sense that rogue behavior has gone too far is legitimate, then someone has to do penance for both its sins and those of under-punished programs past. Not since SMU received the football death penalty has a scandal rocked college football. The last strong attempt came in 2002 when Alabama received a two-year postseason ban and major scholarship reductions, which Marsh called "a 2-by-4 to the head." There's no death in USC's football future. But punishing the school for a lack of institutional control -- if the allegations are accurate -- would be the biceps flex the NCAA needs. Banning the Trojans from the Rose Bowl or from TV, or docking them a dozen scholarships for a couple of years, would show no school is untouchable. Everybody best behave, no matter what a school's record book reads or pocketbook holds.
So be careful, Trojans and fans. Maybe USC's not the biggest offender out there. But for now, it's the most famous, it's at the wrong place at the wrong time, and its punishments could signal that change is coming to college football.

What worries me is that if another program were hit hard, they would bounce back quicker than we did.
My question for the football intelligentsia out there is this:
How much harder is it to go from being a program that sucks year in and year out to one that wins 10 games, than to go from having no the problems had by SMU to the same 10 win season? It just seems to me that if we had the same standards of admission as we do, it would have been just as difficult 20 years after the death penalty as if the DP had not happened.

If we hadn't added the stupid recruiting restrictions that we added after the death penalty, we would not have sunk as low as we did sink. But the other kick in the nads which we were not prepared for was the dissolution of the SWC. USC will not have to endure a dissolution of the PAC10. In fact it might grow to the PAC 12. So, if it got whacked and avoided the post DP mistakes that we made, it would bounce back easily.

"...2x4 to the head..." ?
"...lose a dozen scholarships..." ?
"...not get to go to the Rose Bowl..." ?
I'd hate for USC to get hit with anything; I enjoy watching them play, and we were fans when we lived in SoCal.
But COME ON...is this writer ON SOMETHING?!
Who is the NCAA trying to kid?
They couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat.

Don't expect too much. Like the sacred cows of India, the
NCAA has it's own sacred cows and they are not to be dealt
with in a harsh manner. Being a member of this privileged
class will minimize any sanctions that USC will receive.

The only way I know to get teams like Alabama and USC in line is to hit them [deleted] scholarships. How about "No" scholarships for one year and only 12 the second year. This cheating is all about recruiting and that is where they should be hit. Sabin is the biggest cheat in the Southeast and like A&M in the 70's and 80's, forcing everyone else, like Ole Miss and Tennessee to ante up and break the rules.

IF the NCAA shows its teeth, then we will see that they are broken, missing and stained yellow.

The NCAA is British then?
