Three Mustangs On Texas Sports Hall of Fame Ballot

Fans Welcome To Join TSHOF And Vote For Nominees

July 6, 2009

WACO (SMU/TSHOF) - Three former Mustangs highlight the Texas Sports Hall of Fame Ballot, the TSHOF Selection Committee announced recently. Football standout Louie Kelcher, swim coach legend Richard Quick and hoops all-star Max Williams represent SMU on the list. Kelcher and Quick are on the primary ballot, while Williams is on the veteran's ballot.

Kelcher, an All-America nose guard for the Mustangs and Southwest Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1974, went on to play in the NFL, earning three Pro Bowl invites and a Super Bowl ring with the San Francisco 49ers in 1984.

Quick, who passed away in June, was a six-time United States Olympic coach who directed 13 teams to NCAA titles, the most ever by a swimming coach. He grew up in Dallas, received both his bachelor's and master's degrees at SMU and began his coaching career on the Hilltop. He also played a huge role in starting the women's program at SMU.

Williams was first-team All-Southwest Conference in 1959 and 1960 and helped SMU to the 1958 SWC title. After completing his degree at SMU, he went on to become the coach and general manager of the Dallas Chaparrals of the American Basketball Association.

Official Voting Members of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame will once again be able to help the selection committee determine the newest class. Fans can sign up now to vote for this year's TSHOF honorees. The OVM sign-up deadline to be able to vote for the upcoming class is July 15, 2009. The public can join and receive an official ballot by going to the museum's website, www.tshof.org. The official announcement of the Class of 2009 will be made in September, with the ceremonies to enshrine the Class of 2009 taking place in early 2010 in Waco.

Six nominees from the primary ballot and two from the veterans' ballot will comprise the Class of 2009.

Wasn't somebody related to Max Williams on the basketball team a couple of years ago?

And didn't Max Williams set up the sting on the late Jimmy Tubbs? What a shameful "representative" of SMU.
I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.
