I am glad he mentioned the hypocrisy considering everything UT was up to in regards to cheating.
He also indirectly slams that fat drunk Nebraska hick Dale hansen. He did all he could to bring down SMU and ensure the death penalty for the program (with a little help from the former gov of the state of Texas whom never graduated college). For years I would never donate to money to SMU because of the ex governor. He was exalted in the alumni mags to no end. His total contributions to the university have been paltry if one considers his personal wealth. He always promised things to the university he never delivered on. The furthest thing from a T Boone Pickens and his relationship with Oklahoma State. Clements greatest legacy is the downfall of SMU football. Ironic that the leader of those shenanigans never graduated from SMU but simply used his power for self aggrandizement. In a side note to history: Karl Rove (yes that clown) was his political adviser at the time. I am so glad that Ball is proud of SMU. Those were great teams. All but forgotten now.
Actually, Clements gave SMU in Tahoe to SMU at a cost of several million dollars and he and his wife have just given unrestricted, I believe over $100MM to Southwestern. Don't agree with his leadership, but generousity is one of his virtues.
Well maybe he is getting a bit more generous in his old age because the guy used to be a tease in regards to SMU. Its a bit ironic that he gives most of his money to a UT school (i.e UT SOUTHWESTERN is directly a part of UT Austin unlike UTD or UT arlington).
Maybe some of those recent donations help make up for his ensuring SMU football was destroyed. A little honesty and less arrogance would have gone a long way with the NCAA. He was indirectly responsible for the hiring of Kenneth Pye. SMU's SAT scores decreased over a hundred points under PYE, while alumni giving suffered. SMU lost Tens of millions of dollars in donations from alumni during the Pye years (while the exaltation of the gov continued in the alumni magazines even AFTER the scandal). Why SMU never broke ties with the man responsible for its pre Turner downfall in the athletic and academic world is beyond me. In the big picture he has has cost SMU much more than he has ever given.
I would imagine he meant Taos. Sir, shooting-star, sir.
Frosh 2005 (TEN YEARS AGO!?!) The original Heavy Metal.
Jerry spoke in Houston at the SMU Football Greats event put on by the Houston Alumni Chapter and the Mustang Club this past May. It was fantastic to hear about his experience at SMU and great to see his passion/love for the school. Jerry is first class all the way.
