Joe Haering: FULFILLING HIS PROMISE

Postby PonyPride » Fri Jul 24, 2009 10:19 am

Joe Haering promised himself that if he ever coached again, it would be with June Jones, and last week, he was named the new linebackers coach at SMU.

Haering visited with PonyFans.com to explain why coaches are so eager to reunite with Jones, how he plans to work with the SMU linebackers starting next month, and what he learned from one of his former bosses, who now is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

If there was ever a need... "all these years I’ve been around football, and I’ve scouted, I’ve coached in the pros … the team that tackles the best usually wins. It’s fundamental. “

If he can teach our kids that between now and the start of the season there is a good chance we can have a good season. At least at this point I know we have a kicker who can tackle. 8)
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Interesting — that statement stood out at me, too.
Here's hoping he can make our linebackers into superior tacklers.

He is absolutely right. If you can't tackle - everything else you do on defense doesn't matter. That is the main reason we have had two 1-11 seasons. Too few of our defensive players actually tackled anyone. In my opinion jumping on somebody's back and riding them for 10 yards is not tackling.

Refreshing to see a coach make a statement regarding the importance of good tackling. If you were to take the time to review the real time game threads from last year they are full of exasperating comments re poor and missed tackles. Last year the Ponies tended to tackle high and bounce off and/or get dragged for yards after contact. Yes, the lack of proper tackling technique was a major factor in the poor defensive performances last year. I hope Haering is an aggressive coach who really gets after tackling technique

Great story. Not sure what he can bring in the way of recruiting, but he should have a good eye for talent given his background in scouting. Also noticed Nam and George Allen in his background. Bet he's not soft.
