The weakness of our secondary has been the inability to pass rush. Correct that, and our coverage will improve dramatically.

Actually, the secondary may arguably be the most dominate part of our defense. I remember how they so intimidated Navy last year that Navy didn't even attempt a pass. Now that is domination!

Last year's team had two significantly weak areas, the D-line and the RB position. Neither produced anything of significance last year. A weak pass rush put added pressure on the secondary and a nonexistent rush defense put pressure on the entire team. A weak running game made the passing game more of a challenge.

It appears the coaches are aware and making plans to address these two weak areas.

Now what little I did see, it appears we are heads and tails above the competition in pregame warmups.

I think Bryan McCann and Derrius Bell are pretty good.

I have to agree with Mrydel, if you give the quarterback all the time in the world your CB's are going to get beat and if not them it will be the LB that move up to try and shut down the quarterback leaving the RB or TE open for a nice dump and 10+ yards. At this point I don't think putting the best CB in college football will make a dramatic difference.

Hopefully playing a 3-4 will play to more of our strengths and size and that will work itself out. Can't wait to see Yenga as a LB, that will be a sight to see.

Mrydel is right. The D-line is our weakest link. We will be OK at corner. Add our juco's to the mix and we can be OK in the secondary. We can be OK at linebacker. D-line overall is the weakest link. And I won't limit it to the pash rush; we are weak at tackle.

Now, that may expose our secondary, too, but you can't cover forever; you have to have a pass rush.

It is not a coincidence that during the best season SMU has had in a long time, SMU had the best D-line in a long time.

Does someone have the stat on average yards after catch our opponents laid on the secondary last year? My sense is that Bell was the only defensive back that tackled at the point of the catch.

Running somewhere in the weak link running is depth at running back. After Chris Butler, it gets really dicy, especially if McNeal does not gain eligibility. We have a bunch of guys named Herb after Butler.

I appreciate your humor. Unfortunately, we will be facing that outstanding Navy running attack again this year with their sophomore QB who is much quicker and a far superior runner than last year's starter. This is one game where our DTs will really be exposed and our LBs will really be tested. Why pass when you can control the clock, game and simply run up the field in big chunks.
