I heard a rumor today

Postby Junior » Thu Jul 30, 2009 8:26 pm

...that 5 or so players were declared ineligible today. I haven't heard anything or seen anything else about it, so is this just a rumor?

Could it be on incoming recruits because I think we heard a couple were borderline. But you know what? If you're on this roster and you didn't take care of your work in the classroom, you just let your teammates and coaching staff down.

This is what I mean by "It's the little things, folks."

That sounds somewhat like what I heard.

If you're on any roster at any school, and you don't make the grades to play, you let your teammates and coaching staff — and administration and fan base — down. That isn't a scenario that's unique to SMU.

I guess there's going to be five more openings in next year's recruiting class. TCU signs academic risks and doesn't get burned. We do and we do get burned. Welcome to SMU football.

Really ? Are you kidding? Let me explain this to you in language that you can even understand. Given the fact that we have posted only 2 non-losing seasons since our return in 1989 and given the fact that we have won 2 of our last 25 regular season games and given the fact that the winning percentage of the program has drifted below .500 in our history, we have to be better than most when it comes to this stuff. Other SUCCESSFUL programs may be able to overcome, but we can't.
There is no margin for error with this group.

The little things are about going to class and passing, attending any and all team meetings on time (5-10 minutes before they start), attending practice at 100 percent unless there is an acceptable conflict, attend all conditioning workouts,..etc. GET IT?

I'm just amazed that you wanted to debate this point. Given your dislike for me -- odd -- I can see why you did this. If this was anybody else, you would have read it and move on.

Well, enjoy your day.

Every Patton post in the last 3 months:

The little things! [insert litany of obvious things players should do] GET IT?

Yes, we all get it. We already got it before. Nobody thinks academic ineligability is a good thing.

Relax - your driveling ultimatums and tough talk gets a little old.

First of all, this is probably regarding incoming recruits (since it's the same number that we know are probably not going to be eligible). It's a positive to see that we're now able to look at academically marginal recruits. If they don't make it in, maybe we can get them in the future - if they don't, they don't count against scholarship limits but at least we'll get some of them and they'll be athletes we couldn't have gotten had they had better grades. Texas Tech and lots of other BCS teams play this game all the time to get USC/UT caliber talent with marginal academics. It's a good sign we can play this game too...you act like people attack you but you attack everyone and everything first. Come on

we oversigned anyway-its obvious Jones knew that several wouldn't make it. Doesn't really open up spots-it just means less players will greyshirt.

I speculated at the beginning that this was incoming recruits. If that's the case, then fine. I don't know if you really count on an incoming recruit to make an impact unless he's all that.

Now, if this is a Chris Butler, Bryce Tennison kind of thing, then we have a problem.

BTW, how does anything think we have been doing in the little things department over the years?
