Yeah, but it basically amounts to a fine — he's going to stay with the team in a voluntary capacity, per ESPN.

Interesting that in addition to his pay, he volunteered to take a 7 percent paycut because of the incident. Seems like a somewhat arbitrary amount.

Either way, here's hoping he learns from his mistake.

Hawaii is in an economic crisis like our Nation. UH President is taking a 10% pay cut, he asked his administrators to do likewise. AD Jim Donovan will be taking a 9% cut, his coaches will follow suit and in Coach Mac case, 7%. Governor Lingle is asking the State workers to take 3 furlough days each month for 2 years to save money, the State judge ruled against her administrative directive, and the battle with the state labor union in ongoing. I hope his helps in answering why is he taking a pay cut in addition to the loss of one month's salary.

Coach McMackin announced on July 28 that he would be voluntarily taking a pay cut due to the financial situation of Hawaii's Athletic Department. This was *well* before any of this controversy started.

I am curious ( and only curious) as to whether or not the pay cut was to be 9% before the fine or if they lessened the cut after the punishment.

The pay cut is 7%, the same percentage that Hawaii's Athletic Director announced he would be taking on July 27...the very next day McMackin and other Hawaii coaches announced that they would also be taking pay cuts. I was expecting the coaching pay cuts to be a similar percentage as what the Athletic Director took...that seems the most straightforward way to do it to me.

Sounds fair to me. It is just the quote above (by ralph)indicated the AD and other coaches were taking a 9% cut and McMackin a 7%.

Link to the pay cut being 7% is below. Ralph just made a typo I think. Ralph is a good guy and I've met him at several gatherings of UH fans. He's been lurking here for quite some time and even informed me about a couple of occasions when he thought I should clarify something here. That was before he started posting here--he can answer the Hawaii stuff too because he knows his stuff.
