Re: ESPN Sports Center - Mel Kiper, Jr.'s Sleepers for 2009I think you can start counting to 3-4 with this last year as far as competing for a quality bowl game. But you have to continue to recruit well over future years. Usually when I make that observation I'm talking about Championship or Top 25 caliber(the stated goal of Orsini and SMU) and competing with TCU and other natural and traditional powers such as Baylor, Tech or even A&M). TCU has reached that level for a decade with an unbelievable record against BCS level schools. I don't see us consistently competing at that level anytime soon based on the 2009 or 2010 Class.

Re: ESPN Sports Center - Mel Kiper, Jr.'s Sleepers for 2009Stallion is correct.
Kiper made a similar prediction for a much improved SMU season back during the Phil Bennett era - I forget which year.
Re: ESPN Sports Center - Mel Kiper, Jr.'s Sleepers for 2009SMU in the news is really the point.
Re: ESPN Sports Center - Mel Kiper, Jr.'s Sleepers for 2009"Who in the hell is Mel Kiper, anyway? I mean, here's a guy who criticizes everybody, whoever they take. In my knowledge of him, he's never even put on a jockstrap, he's never been a player, he's never been a coach, he's never been a scout, he's never been an administrator, and all of a sudden, he's an expert. Mel Kiper has no more credentials to do what he's doing than my neighbor, and my neighbor's a postman and he doesn't even have season tickets to the NFL."
I hope he's right though!

Re: ESPN Sports Center - Mel Kiper, Jr.'s Sleepers for 2009As you recall several weeks ago, I mentioned that Kiper and Eric Kasilias (sp?) interviewed JJ on ESPN radio for about 4-5 minutes. So, Kiper at least had some information regarding our team and its players. Add in the fact that our schedule is much weaker this year than last year because WAZZU is on the schedule instead of TT, and UAB and Marshall instead of Memphis and UCF. (I figure ECU and USM are a push). Additionally Rice will be rebuilding this year from a great year last year (but had many graduate). So, those are four winnable games right there. Add in SFA, Tulane, and you have six winnable games. And there are still games against Navy, TCU, UTEP, UH, and Tulsa. Tulsa, UTEP and UH all have been known to hiccup now and then. Navy and TCU will be our toughest challenges this year. So, I can see six wins on this schedule. We could also win 4 or 8 as well. Injuries and academic casualties will be the key this year. Hopefully, JJ got some guys attention last year on the school work, so that is not a problem this year.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
