SMU opens practice

Nothing like a nice and toasty August morning to kick off practice.

The Mustangs opened with their fitness tests, including the dreaded 220s, which are 10 down-and-backs the length of the field, completing each in under 35 seconds.

Coach June Jones said he was pleased with his players' conditioning on the opening day. He said freshman linebacker Byron Brown led the way.

Other notables: Running back and Miami transfer Shawnbrey McNeal practiced with the team even as his eligibility remains uncertain, and probably will until September. ... Offensive lineman Josh LeRibeus won't join the team until school starts, Jones said, after missing scheduled appointments with Jones.

E.J. Drewery is practicing at linebacker instead of receiver. Jones said he likes the competitive streak in Drewery, who played some defense in high school.

Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell said he's lost fat and added muscle this summer and feels "More put together, more agile."

SMU has meetings this afternoon, is off on Sunday and resumes practice at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

I would be surprised, if Josh rejoins the team.

Ah, regarding Mr. LeRibus -- the one who the majority on this board gave a pass to about the workout stuff except me -- it's about the little things. Not meeting w jones is on that list. Pretty damn selfish and pretty damn stupid.

Well for once you are right. Not coming to the voluntary workouts has no bearing whatsoever in the "little things" category. There are numerous reason why an athlete may not attend those. Where is your list of all the others that did not show, opening critcizing each of them? Not knowing the reason gives you no basis for your conjecture.

However, not showing for meeting with the head coach (with apparently no good reason or there would not be punishment) is just plain stupid and does give me reason to now believe he might not be back. There is still his side that we have not heard, but I am sorry mr. pony, this does sound very much like a suspension to me.

Someone speculated that he was just tired of football. That happens. If that is true, I thank him for his service to the team and wish him well.

If it's true that he has lost the fire, then stop the charade and tell everyone. But if he's acting like this to try and keep his scholarship then he's pretty much unworthy of it.

Mrydel I did rattle some little things. But I respectfully disagree about the summer workouts. We're at a point in this game where you do this to keep the team concept in play. This is unwritten rule thing.

This could free up a scholarship for a player who wants to be here and play football..........

I heard he missed practices not because he was selfish or stupid but because he was thinking about quitting. Please don't call him selfish or stupid unless you know him and slow down with the scoreboarding - his correlation with skipping practices isn't causation of anything.

If you want to rip a guy without bothering to find out the reasons behind something, for god's sake, that's what TCU and NTSU are for.
