SFA Football Kicks Off Fall Camp
Lumberjack players report to campus for preseason workouts

Aug. 7, 2009

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Approximately 90 athletes reported to campus Friday afternoon to begin preparations for the 2009 football season. The players will spend the day getting checked in, and participating in team meetings before taking the field Saturday for their first official workout. The practice session will be the first of 23 practice dates before SFA begins game-week preparations.

The Lumberjacks open the 2009 season Saturday, Sept. 5, when they travel to Dallas, Texas to take on SMU. The 'Jacks enter the season with a lot of excitement due to the number of returnees from a record-setting 2008 squad. Junior quarterback Jeremy Moses is one of nine returning starters on the offense along with 2008 SLC Newcomer of the Year Duane Brooks.

Despite all the offensive firepower that returns, it is the SFA defense that has received most of the headlines during the offseason. Preseason first-team All-Southland Conference selections Tim Knicky and Jabara Williams have already earned prestigious preseason awards from the national media. Williams, a junior linebacker from Garrison, Texas, has garnered first-team All-America honors from Consensus Draft Services, Phil Steele Magazine and the Sports Network. Knicky enters his final season as a 2009 Preseason Second-Team All-American according to the Consensus Draft Report and Phil Steele Magazine.

Along with Knicky and Williams, Brooks and Moses have also received national preseason honors. Both earned Consensus Draft Report honorable mention recognition.

SFA returns a total of 21 starters and 35 letterwinners from a team that led the league in passing offense and sacks, and averaged 19 points per game more in 2009 than the previous year. Among the 21 starters, SFA also returns seven of its nine All-SLC selections from a year ago, including first-team selections Knicky and Williams.

If we really sell out Ford for this game, we had better crush them by 60. Anything but complete domination would be humiliation.

If we do sell out we will definitely crush em. I know for a fact that when our boys see and hear us it pumps them up and makes them proud that the fans are supporting them. We seriously need more noise from the "12th Man" so lets bring it on!!!!!!!!!!

Williams Named to Buck Buchanan Award Preseason Watch List
Junior linebacker looks to post big numbers for SFA defense in 2009

Aug. 9, 2009

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Stephen F. Austin junior linebacker Jabara Williams has been named to the 2009 Buck Buchanan Preseason Watch List announced Sports Network Executive Director Dave Coulson in a release earlier this week. The Buchanan Award is given annually to the top defensive player at the NCAA Division I FCS level. Williams is one of only 20 players named to the preseason watch list.

The Garrison, Texas, native enters the 2009 season garnering a lot of national attentions. Following a sophomore season that saw him lead the Southland Conference in tackles (132) and earn first-team all-conference honors, Williams has been named to three preseason All-America teams. A 2009 Preseason First-Team All-America selection according to Phil Steele's Magazine, the Sports Network and Consensus Draft Report, Williams finished off his sophomore campaign ranked ninth nationally in tackles.

Williams tallied 17 or more tackles four times in 2008, including a career-high 21 tackles in the season finale against Northwestern State. Williams also forced two fumbles and picked off three passes, including two against nationally ranked South Dakota State. In 2007, he split time between linebacker and running back, including three games where he started at both positions. He finished his rookie season with 58 tackles and 230 yards rushing with one rushing touchdown. Williams has 190 tackles, three interceptions, three forced fumbles, 3.5 sacks, 9.5 tackles for loss and two blocked kicks in his SFA career.

This has the potential for being a trap game. They appear to be able to pass and play defense. This one needs to be put away early and often, or SMU risks a very difficult 9/5/2009.
