Saturday practice report

Postby PonyPride » Sat Aug 15, 2009 3:53 pm

On the mend: Junior WR Aldrick Robinson clearly is on the mend. The Ponies' fastest receiver was pulled from practice a couple of days ago with a tender hamstring, but not only appeared to be at top speed today, but also seemed to be feeling no ill effects from the leg — after one reception on a crossing route, Robinson went into a playful routine of high kicks, getting his feet about shoulder-high. That doesn't ever play into football skill, of course, but it certainly suggested that his hamstring is feeling better.

First pick: Running against a scout-team offense (with safety Jay Scott at QB, freshman ILB Brandon Henderson had his first INT of preseason workouts.

Third weapon? WR Terrance Wilkerson had another strong day of practice, making numerous catches, including a 40-yard bomb when he got behind the defense and a quick screen pass that he caught before beating the defense to the sideline and racing upfield.

New wrinkle: Junior LB Patrick Fleming might be headed toward doing some double duty, as he worked for the second day in a row at TE. The Ponies didn't use a TE last year, but adding Fleming to the offense adds to the pass protection and adds a sure-handed target to attack underneath seams in the defense.

Back in the clear: With Fleming getting a lot of reps on offense, redshirt freshman Cameron Rogers took some of Fleming's turns with the first-team LBs unit that also included Youri Yenga, Pete Fleps and Chase Kennemer.

Bell ringer: One of the nicest defensive plays of the day was turned in by sophomore CB Derrius Bell, who chased Wilkerson down the right sideline on a deep fly pattern, and closed in time to leap high in front of Wilkerson and knock the ball out of bounds.

Aim low: Junior WR A'Darius Medford made perhaps the catch of the day on a simple out route, when QB Braden Smith floated a short pass over the defense, but fell short of reaching Medford, who dove forward to pluck it out of the air inches above the turf.

Be Free: Redshirt freshman Jordan Free worked at LG with the first-team offensive line, joining LT Kelvin Beachum, Jr., C Mitch Enright, RG Bryce Tennison and RT J.T. Brooks o the top unit.

Attended my first practice of the summer and enjoyed watching all the action.

But one thing stuck in mind and I know I really, really missed it.

The booming inspiring voice of one Coach Frank Gansz.

The silence was deafening!

We miss ya Coach.

RIP

Wish I could have been there for one of those.

I made it out for the last hour of practice yesterday and and the final half hour today... It was the first time I had actually gone to football practice since I worked for the video staff during spring ball my freshman year. At a football practice I really never know what to look for... unless I have a camera in my hand... but I will say this - no matter how much I was prepared for Margus Hunt, I wasn't prepared. He ran passed me at the end of practice on his way out at the end. Let me tell you I didn't need a roster nor did I tell any one to tell me who he was.

The man is huge. He looks like Grendel or Beowulf. Honestly, a mythic ancient hero. The man certainly looks the part, and even though I hear he's a super nice guy, he looked like he could rip my head off hand it to the next guy and keep on running without missing a beat. Anyway, I prepared myself and I wasn't prepared. Let's just hope he really takes to the game.

Oh... and Special_Delivery, good seeing you this AM.

PonyPride, was Brandon Henderson with the 2nd or 3rd team defense when he got the int against the scout team?

Wasn't really a "second-team" or "third-team" situation. This was defense against defense, and didn't look like there was a real pecking order in the rotation.

He was with his usual running mates: Taylor Reed, Ja'Gared Davis and E.J. Drewery.
