NFL scouts at practice

Postby indianmustang » Tue Aug 18, 2009 2:52 pm

Sanders is starting to get extra attention. The wide receiver has already had three NFL teams scout him early into his senior season, with two more expected next week. While Jones has said Sanders goes hard and lays it all out each and every practice,

It's nothing new to have scouts at practice. A lot of teams have regional scouts that come by multiple times during the season. They observe practice, they ask coaches and support staff about certain players, and they watch film on them. More than likely, they will hit SMU in the morning, then go over to TCU or UNT in the afternoon. They are pretty much looking at every senior at this point, even if Emmanuel is our only draftable player.

Good to know the the NFL teams that are visiting the campus. No one reported this last year. Good article. We need to get this type of stuff publicized for recruiting purposes. Coach Reinebold had it on his facebook page that NFL scouts were on campus.

I heard the New Orleans scout was there to see Sanders and was really taken aback when he saw Margus Hunt and Taylor Thompson ... and was told they'll be a freshman and sophomore, respectively, this season.

A couple of more teams were out there as well. Marquis Frazier will also go in the draft if he has plays wells (hopefully he does not declare for 3 more years). In fact Frazier could go pretty high when he decides to go.

Did Coach Reinbold also report on his FaceBook / My Space that we went 1-11 last year?

Let's let these kids establish themselves as good players for us before sending them to the NFL. Hunt and Frazier have never played a down here. Thompson showed a lot of promise last year in limited time. I'd love to see them all at the next level but it's not realistic right now. Just because they look the part (especially for SMU's standards) doesn't mean a thing.

You have to keep in mind that New Orleans thinks Morestead kicked off last year. Of the two, either their reporters or their scouts are not too good with facts.

I total agree. I know we will have those naysayers out there but it is good to see that we have players that are getting looks and again the publicity helps in recruiting. It is interesting that someone who has posted less that 10 times all of a sudden is an authority ( unless he is someone else using another username). I think I know the real reason why they are doing this though. It was expected. Good post Indianmustang.

Not sure what my post count has to do with anything. I know what I'm talking about. My point is simply that scouts have been at practices all along. It's their job. They were there last year. They were there during the Bennett era and I'm sure before that. Just because there are coaches who broadcast it more frequently now doesn't mean they haven't been around. They most likely hit SMU in the morning, then go to TCU or UNT in the afternoon. Then to Baylor the next day, etc. I'm sure they flocked to Rice last year to see Dillard/Clement/Casey. Well, they were also at SMU to see Morstead, Martin, etc.

I guess I'll try to boost my post count so I can qualify as a "fan" on this board. By no means am I a troll, but I am also much more realistic about the state of things at SMU that most people on this board. Forgive me in advance for not necessarily being a cheerleader.

The school need good publicity. This is good publicity especially for recruiting, that is why Coach Reinebold posted it on his website. No need to try and throw cold water on that. Anyway, I guess you were compelled to go do that and I expect you to continue.
