Moody Feasibility Study

Postby smupony94 » Thu Aug 20, 2009 9:55 am

SMU Athletics is currently considering renovations to improve the fan experience at Moody Coliseum and to solidify SMU Athletics’ competitive positioning within C-USA and nationally for years to come. We are performing a feasibility study with the assistance of a team of professionals which includes CSL International, a nationally recognized consumer market analysis firm. CSL will conduct a market analysis to assist us in determining our needs and those of the major stakeholders in this renovation and expansion.

In order to determine what will best suit our needs, we are soliciting input on what seating options would be most attractive to Mustang fans. Specifically, we are conducting a survey regarding your satisfaction with the existing facility, as well your potential interest in seating offerings that could be included in a renovated Moody Coliseum.

We seek your opinions at this critical moment as we assess the future of Moody Coliseum and the ability of Mustang fans to support potential facility renovations. Please keep in mind that planning for potential facility renovations is a multi-year process. Answer the questions in this survey with a long-term economic perspective and the assumption that the economy will operate under typical historical patterns. Your time, insight and advice are deeply appreciated.

To launch the survey, simply click on the link below or cut and paste the link into the address bar of your internet browser and hit return.

Thank you in advance for your time to participate in this project and thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Sincerely,

Steve Orsini

Director of Athletics

I got the same email from Steve O. He probably did not like my answers, but I did say that I don't live close to Dallas, so I would not be interested in buying premium seating or a club suite. Sorry, you guys will have to find someone else to let you use their suite.

I don't have the ability to pay for the premium seating but I still maintain my season tickets and have not been to a game in 6 years. I have been able to find people to use them for years.

Survey made me mad. Increasingly annoyed at Orsini. Corporatizing Moody is not an improvement. Blue seats currently "sold out" yet mostly empty. Cushy leather seats and "premium" food options won't change it. Need to do things to enhance atmosphere, not detract from it.

I agree that corporatizing is the wrong way to go as well. I took advantage of the open ended answer section at the end to tell them that I thought that any Moody renovations should feature students ringing the court. If they want to put in suites or club seating higher up then fine, but they need to get the students right there if it is ever going to be a real college basketball experience. Although they did not address it, I would hope that any renovations would also fix the embarassment that is the east end of the court.

bit leery of this, but I can get partially on board as long as they do it right. Nothing wrong with building some suites and creating a more exclusive VIP section down low...generate more revenue for the program.

Other than that though, they need to use the majority of the money to widen the concourse, add and modernize the restrooms and concessions. I really hope they leave the majority of the seating bowl alone...if we can ever put a team on the floor and start getting nice crowds, the atmosphere in Moody is electric as is...Think back to the first TT game or our battles with Tulsa for the conference crown during the Sasser years, the buzz and vibe in those games was up there with some of the top gyms in the country.

A-
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

As the student representative for the study, I can almost certainly say they will not be altering the seating bowl. I likened Moody's old feel to Cameron Indoor, and that it should not be updated.

My big input from a student's perspective was to change where the student section was from behind the bench and scorer's table to directly across the court. I personally, hate being right behind the scorer's table, but I guess we will see.

I believe they definitely will widen the concourses, update the concessions and restrooms, and most importantly update the coaches' offices.

The coaches' offices are in the Crum Center. Do you mean the offices for tennis and golf?

I did the survey.

Lodge seats are kind of cool. Not sure we need the corner party suites. It would be fine with me to have VIP suites to add money to the program. Yes, as it stands now the "blue seats" are never 1/4 right now. Either use them or give them away.

The student seating, band seating, blue seats, and bleachers all need to be addressed. The student seating is a joke right now. Surely they can move the court more center to allow balanced seating on both sides.

Get a corporate naming sponsor is fine with me for more revenue.

I think we all agree to the concourse widening, more and better restrooms, and better concessions. How about a POS machine to make things run smoother :) ?
