Day 13/14 Quotes
By Rick Atkinson for cusa-fans.com

Evan Huahulu, sophomore defensive lineman
How’s the D-line shaping up?
“We’re looking real good. Everybody’s fitting into their positions pretty good. We’re looking to have some good depth this year.”

What do you love about this game?
“Ever since I was a little kid, we used to just go and play on the streets and stuff. It’s just one of those things that stuck, like wrestling, football - just sports in general, having fun with your teammates. We’re here all day together so it’s like we’re a family. I feel like these guys are like my brothers. It’s just fun to be with them.”

What pumps you up about this team?
“Just the turnaround. I remember people talking to me about the Pony Express and everything, and to see that come here [again.] I have friends that play at [USC] and they get all the attention and stuff. I just want to see that come here.”

Who can eat the most on the D-line?
“Oh, man. (pause) I think I take the cake, easily. But, I don’t know. Taylor [Thompson] can eat. He came in the other day with a big old giant sub and he ate it. It was crazy.”

What’s your favorite food?
“I love Tongan food. It’s good stuff. They don’t have it out here. I wish they did.”

How long have you played the ukulele?
“I bought it when I went home from one of my buddies in my high school. I just started playing a few months ago.”

Do you play it in the locker room?
“Yeah, we play all the time. The [Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders] were here and I was playing. Emmanuel Sanders and I played and we serenaded them a little bit.”

Did they like it?
“Yeah, they were taking pictures and clapping and everything. It was funny.”

What about this Young Jeezy tunnel music?
“I’m excited. I think the SMU fans are going to like it a lot. … The chorus part is Young Jeezy. It’s called I Put On For My City. They had a Dallas rapper come in and put some hooks to it that talk about SMU and Dallas and how we need to unite together. Jeezy wrote the hooks.

How’d you like the Kickoff Luncheon?
“I had a blast. I sat with some great people. I had fun. That’s my last one, I’m sad to say. But happy to say, you know?”

Knowing that defenses will key on you, what do you expect to see?
“I don’t think defenses are keying on me since Aldrick [Robinson] has come along. In the previous years they’ll be in a zone, but they’ll have one guy manned up on me. … They switch it up and they just try to confuse me and keep me on my toes.”

How does this affect your mindset and preparation?
“I’m excited. That means you’re doing something right. I mean, it’s been happening since my sophomore year, so I’m kind of used to it by now. … I’m ready.”

How’s practice this year compared to last?
“I think we’ve gotten 100-percent better. The quarterback, Bo [Levi Mitchell], knows what he’s doing a lot more. He’s making the right reads. We know the offense and we’re moving faster.”

What are your goals this year?
“My goal is to help the team get to the highest level, help the team get these six wins and get to bowl game.”

How’s team attitude?
“I would say very positive. I think everybody is starting to believe that we can do it. Everybody’s believing in themselves and believing in the program. They’re believing in
the coaches. They’re believing in everything. It’s just a different atmosphere in the locker room now.”

What about the young guys?
“We have real good group of young players. These guys come in, they’re getting it, and they’re getting it right off the bat. Some of them might have a chance to even play this year.”

Russell Carter, SMU All-America defensive back (’83)
Your impressions of the team?
“They’re looking good. They’ve got a lot of speed now, so hopefully things will start to change.”

Where will the Mustangs show the most improvement?
“I just think that athletic-wise they’re getting a lot more talent. You know, you play some of the younger kids and give them a chance. It pays off maybe not this year but next year and the year after that.”

What’s your greatest SMU memory?
“I think just being around Eric Dickerson and Craig James and Reggie Dupard and Michael Carter and Rod Jones and Byron Hunt. It was a great group of people here at the time. And we were also winning so it made it fun to be here.”

Great read, thanks for posting. If nobody got vid footage of the ukulele concert, I'm gonna be really upset.
