Wednesday practice report

Postby PonyPride » Wed Aug 26, 2009 10:31 am

Rock ... solid? Sophomore Chris Banjo seems entrenched as the starting FS, but several players have been battling for time at SS. For the last few days, senior Rock Dennis has been running with the first team.

Slight juggling: After spending much of the first two weeks of camp at one of the inside LB spots, Pete Fleps got some work Wednesday back at the outside. He worked the first-team unit with the same starters: Youri Yenga, Chase Kennemer and Cameron Rogers, while the second team consisted of Pat Fleming and Ja'Gared Davis out outside, with Taylor Reed and Brandon Henderson inside.

Need a fourth: It's pretty clear that the top three WRs are Emmanuel Sanders, Aldrick Robinson and Terrance Wilkerson, but a number of players — Justin Willis, Cole Beasley, Cole Loftin, Brad Haynes, Darius Johnson — have been vying for the fourth spot in head coach June Jones' four-WR offense. In Wednesday's practice, Beasley got the snaps with the first-team unit.

Please come back: Johnson has opened a lot of eyes in his first camp, but Jones said his freshman WR has to be more consistent doing "the little things." For example, when he didn't come back to meet a short pass in the flat, S Bryce Hudman stepped in front and walked into the end zone.

Seizing the opportunity: It's every lineman's dream — QB Kyle Padron took a snap, whirled around to his left and fired a screen pass ... right into the waiting arms of DE Marquis Frazier, who calmly made the interception and took off for a score.

Defensive play of the day: When a pass intended for Zach Zimmerman was thrown a little behind him, Hudman camped out, awaiting his second sure interception of the morning. Zimmerman, however, didn't give up on the play, going around Hudman and dipping under his arm just enough to knock the ball harmlessly to the ground.

How hip: RB Chris Butler was back on the field after missing a couple of days with a strained hip flexor, but he and RB Shawnbrey McNeal took very few snaps; RBs Bryce Lunday and Zach Line got the majority of the work Wednesday in team drills.

another terrific post. I think Hudman is going to be key this year on defense.

Thanks, PP. I like the mix of 4th receivers we can bring in. Competitive bunch and they each bring something different skill-wise.

The battle for 4th WR is between Beasley, Lofton, Johnson, and Willis that is it. Haynes is backing up Wilkerson for some reason, but the 4th WR spot is a four man race

Wow!!! Didn't know that all of those people were competing for 1 spot. That seems strange they would make Haynes compete for an inside receiver position. If that's the case, i don't know about football. All these years... i thought I knew a little about the sport. Wow!!!

Anyway, why is Haynes The Invisible competing for a WR position? I thought they were using him to just help other players be better.

To my understanding Haynes is not playing inside wr, he is playing outside wr.
