No, but it certainly defines where I'll be sitting.

DiamondM wrote:The reason you can still buy tickets online is that SMU will keep selling tickets until the Fire Marshal says we have to stop. There are 32,000 actual places for butts if they all sit down at the same time and a "sellout" means we sell 32,000 tickets, but that doesn't mean we stop selling at 32,000. That's how we got almost 35K at the previous best attended game. We sold more GA tickets than we had actual GA seats to fill. Same deal here.

For all of those who so confidently say we "won't" or "can't" sell out for the game on Saturday, if we do, I hope you will graciously come back here on Sunday or Monday to tell us what idiots you were. I myself don't make predictions because I just don't like the taste of crow.

What annoys me is the glee so many SMU "faithful" seem to take in finding the cloud in every silver lining.

"We will never sell out! Why would anyone want to come see SFA and a crappy SMU team?"

"Oh. We might actually sell out? Well, nobody's actually going to come to the game -- it will be a sellout in name only. All the rich guys must have just bought all the tickets. Those seats will just be empty."

"Oh. There might actually be close to 32K people there? Well, it's just DISD students. Doesn't matter if that's exactly the formula Russ Potts used for the ballyhooed Mustang Mania years, I don't like it because I can't guarantee they're actually going to root for SMU."

"Oh. Most of the students who were given free tickets are probably going to root for SMU (you know, the home team, the ones who gave them the tickets and own the stadium they're actually sitting in -- I mean, you could give kids free Dallas Jai Alai tickets and they'd cheer like mad for the home team)? Well, they won't be "real" fans, and they probably can't afford to come back anyway, so what good does it do."

"Oh. Building community rapor is a good idea? Well, we won't be able to get anyone in the stadium the rest of the year, especially if we lose like I think we're going to or at least don't win by 45 points like we should."

DiamondM, listen, it's not that I don't want SMU sell out, it's that it would be hard to imagine that 32k would actually ATTEND the game.

If Mr. Sellout Committee Chairman 'purchases' 1000 seats (his obligation) and gives them all away, what are the realistic chances that all 1000 will show?

doubtful.

I've already had a friend unassociated with SMU say that his firm is giving away tickets...now, I hope that the people who take a ticket go to the game, but c'mon.

Having said that, people have correctly pointed out that KU was a sell-out, but only about 29000 were in their seats at kickoff...to defend that game, it filled up near the end of the 1st quarter (remember, it was 108 degrees that most important day in SMU football history).

Listen, I want to make something perfectly clear (wait, am I BHO?), if they sell/give away 32,000 seats, and give away another 15,000 SRO tix, then I would imagine that we have a near or over full stadium.

I am SO happy for that.

But the reality of past history, [deleted] fan support, [deleted] student attendance, crappy non-conference non-traveling team, LABOR day weekend, OU in town at Jerry world, etc., leads REASONABLE people to believe it when they see it.

Please don't flame us. I went to virtually every home game from 1989 until PB's last year, and watched or listened to virtually all the away games on radio that I could. I'm tired. I wish, hope and pray for a miracle on mockingbird, but please don't tell me I am a bad fan.

Could be as many as 125,000 attending college football games in DFW Saturday. While I don't agree with the constantant bitchin' about lack of SMU coverage in the media-I do think that college football in general gets less coverage in the Dallas media than it deserves. Almost an afterthought but reality in any given week there a hundreds of thousands fans following their respective schools.

I need 4 more tickets. Do some people have extras or should I call box office?
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Isn't that the area for those playing on the "other team" (and not meaning the team on the other side of the field)?

Why don't you do that, hotshot?

I would, but I already have my 2 season tickets for me and my wife...I could, however, buy 20 tickets, possibly talk 5 people into using them and leave 15 empty seats...probably about the same percentage as Roger Staubach is going to bat

Bottom line to me is that we get thousands (5, 10, 15, 20?) of new people to SMU to experience some of the best tailgating in the country on the Boulevard, walk the esplanade (sorry), see the greatness of Ford stadium, and hopefully experience a good game with an SMU win.

We have a lot to offer / sell.
We just need people to realize what is in their backyard.
Of those 5, 10, 15, 20 thousand, some will tell their friends and will return again.

We've got a base of regulars -- we need to bring back some lost fans and some new fans.

This is my feeling and is well said....I am as big a fan as anybody, but to deny the SMU administration has made a TON (and I mean ton) of errors and bad decisions since the death penalty to the point that we are one of the LEAST relevant FBS teams in the country with one of the smallest fan bases is pointless....Blind Faith is what got us here "the Mighty June Jones says we will sellout..its heresey to even doubt that to be true"......

I hope we do sell out, but I don't see it for all the reasons listed..the only true fix for this is start winning conference titles and going to bowls....rest is just window dressing..

This is akin to the idiotic video board message (and timing) blaming us not winning because we are not making enough noise...sorry...but getting whupped by 30 points at home by TCU kinda puts me in the non cheering mood....put a better team on the field and I will cheer as loud as anyone.

Look folks-regardless of whether every seat will be accounted for (doubtful) or whether there will be some empty seats that were actually paid for by someone (likely), there will be a lot more people at the game with the "Sell Out" Campaign than without it. I think the Athletic Department should be praised for the "Sell Out" Campaign. It is real gratifying to see effort put into getting fans in the stadium. Everyone is correct that more people will come when we start winning but until that day comes (which I believe is soon), we need these efforts to get as many people as possible to the games. SMU was bad for 20 years for a reason (anti-competitive admission policies, failure to hire proven winning Division 1-A coaches, lack of facilities, lack of a coordinated effort between the Athletic Department and Board of Trustees (and rest of the school) to put a winning team on the field) but things are changing. We are starting to turn this corner so quit [deleted] people and enjoy the ride.

This is one of those ''glass half-empty, glass half-full' scenarios, isn't it? I expect to see the 'glass half-full' on Saturday. Got my 8 tickets today. See ya at Ford! GO MUSTANGS!

Nother good post....speaking for myself, I appreciate the efforts, admit this is greatly increasing what the attendance would be without it...I just stated that I thought it would not be a sellout, and certainly not a record...and got attacked by a pack of Sunshiners...

Only thing I will say different is that we have not turned the corner yet, we need results on the field, a 1-11 season after a 1-11 season is not progress or turning a corner....that is what it all comes down to..

Go ahead and blame my crappy attitude and lack of faith in our leaders for us being so bad in football for all these years if it makes you feel better....Truth is, when they put a product on the field that can compete in our conference year after year, most things will fix themselves...Wins cures all.

Thank you.

If we were to win the National Championship, some people would [deleted] because we didn't win by enough points. Or the stripes on the uniforms were too wide. Or that their hot dog was cold. Or that the cheerleaders had fat thighs. Or that they couldn't bring their umbrella into the stadium. Or FILL IN THE BLANK.
