Doherty Stepping His Game Up

Postby Blvd_Stang » Wed Aug 26, 2009 12:29 am

I went through the rivals top 150 Basketball recruits, and just looked at the texas prospects. I was surprised how many had us on their list. Who knows if we'll land any of them, but even one amongst this crop could have a Paul McCoy type affect...

Seriously, please stop w/all this nonsense. The only hoop recruits that get mentioned on this board are ones that aren't coming. Move on. Of those 3, Scott is the only one giving us lip service. Mitchell can barely ready, seriously. Kid couldn't sniff SMU on a good day. Cobbins is a pipe dream that is a huge Memphis lean right now. He could get as far away as Virginia, but it won't be SMU. Might as well list Keaton Miles as well.

How is this Doh stepping up his game when he actually got OV from players of that caliber last year and didn't land them either, see Dotson etc

It should be a no-brainer to offer a 4 or 5 star player from this area. I don't think he's "stepping up his game" at all. Let's face it, if he doesn't land an impact player or two (not necessarily 4 or 5 stars), he probably won't be assembling a 2011 recruiting class.

Doherty has been an absolute disaster and has taken this program nowhere. In fact, this program has regressed under his tenure here. This year will be another ugly year.

Tubbs got sniffs from great Dallas players, but landed none despite having the best connections of any coach we've had. Until we have a winning program, we are not going to compete for recruits against the ACC, Big XII, or Memphis for that matter. Now in Chicago, Detroit, LA, or DC we might have a better chance where they only see playing in Dallas.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

The issue is that the staff doesn't think we are that far away from being legitimately good. Get the McCoy/Haynes/Clinkscales/Otis/Nyakundi class some seasoning, then add a marquee piece or two. In their eyes, we could add Reggie Sonnier/Nick Hinton or whomever right now, but that doesn't do anything for getting us over the hump. They have a roster full of role players and one difference maker currently. Instead of adding more role players, they are holding out for kids that can get them over the top. We'll see.

The problem with elephant hunting is while u are waiting on the big one u let alot of very good prospects with tremendous amounts of potential slip away. Very risky.
They have to be working the Sonniers, Clarkson, Hintons of the world very, very hard because the track record is not good for this coaching staff landing a marquee piece or two. Alot of W's will help.

To be fair, each of the last two classes were supposed to have a marquee piece in Dia & McCoy. Still time for Dia, but that looks like a miss right now. I tend to agree w/you, though. We have 3 available , and they are slotted as a low post big, a face-up 4 or elite wing, and a PG. The problem w/Sonnier and even Clarkson is that we're loaded up on combo's and short on primary ball handlers & decision-makers. I think McCoy is a point, but opinions vary and others suggest combo. Walker is a combo. Clinkscales is a combo. Need a PG in '10 and a pretty good one. If I'm Doh, I find room for Clarkson should he want in, position be damned. I'm not sure about Sonnier yet.

Doh really needs a kid like Leslee Smith to get this class started. I'm not sure we're sold on Hinton either, which may be a mistake. We're definitely elephant hunting, but not really registering w/the Cobbins/Scotts of the world.

Smith would be a very good start. Doh, Lutz & company should have a very good idea re: Hinton & Sonnier. They are right in our backyard.
I'm interested 2 c how Clink handles the rock. DeCarlos Frank from Beaumont is another good guard prospect.

It's a good thing we have operation sell out in place! Hopefully it will help these recruits dream big at SMU.

agreed. A sell out really helps w/recruits in the building. Ponies need to strike quickly, keep that crowd loud
