SFA Game Takeaway

Postby Blvd_Stang » Sat Sep 05, 2009 10:58 pm

Watching that game was PAINFUL! With that said there were some positives: the new defensive scheme based on turnovers had 5 Ints, McNeal played great in the second half, The Truth played pretty well, and we actually won a close game. The negatives: BLM looked absolutely horrible, and the secondary played poorly in coverage and we got very little pressure on the QB most of the game.

Takeaway: If anything can be improved on the easiest its probably the passing game because of our scheme and JJ, so thats good. However, this was SFA who is Div 1AA and we beat Texas State more handily.

Thoughts??

True. But we could easily go another season without a win over a 1-A (FBS) team.

As the guys sitting behind me said:

Looking at the schedule, we probably don't have another chance to win until 11/7 against Rice.

no. SFA was one of the worst teams in their conference. Tx State, the only team we beat last year, beat SFA 62 21 or something.

And Rice seems to have our number in recent years, so don't bet on it.

The defense looked better, but not by much. Our tackling was improved somewhat, but we were abysmal last year, so that isn't saying much. Glad to see the 5 INTs, but there was zero pressure on their QB, and our DBs got burned quite a bit. They didn't turn their heads around in coverage.

Their offense seemed to run JJ type plays better than we did. They were hitting the short passes and the WRs got some yardage out of them. And if Mitchell doesn't get the ball to the receivers in stride, then the Run & Shoot will not work. If the receivers are having to lay out or jump way up for the ball, then there is no opportunity for them to turn the short passes into anything, and that is what JJ's offense starts with.

The only real positives on offense were Shawnbrey McNeal, the long kick by Szymanski, and the fact that they didn't give up in the 4th quarter.

But as they say, I would rather win ugly than lose pretty. And this was an ugly, ugly win.

Defense is way better than last year. They only called one real blitz the whole game (yes, they rush Yenga every down, but that just makes it a 4 man rush), and that was at the end of the game on the sack. DL did very well for most of the night, and QB was pressured even though not sacked.

IF (and maybe it is a big if) BLM plays a halfway decent game, this is a 52-9 whooping. R&S teams simply can't win when a QB plays THAT poorly. Period. It is an absolutle miracle that we were able to win this game when he played that bad. Because of it, the D was absolutley gassed when the other team went hurryup at the end of the second quarter. add to that they started throwing the screens, they wore those corners out and they didn't recover the whole game.

Not sure I'm with you on the DL. I thought our DL would do much better against this level of competition. I think this means once again our opponants qb will have as much time as he wants to deliver - that will cost us much more later in the season unless something is fixed.

A win is not a win. If you think like that you will not improve. We need to think like we were embarrassed by SFA. They outplayed us and should have won the game. I have lost all confidence that BLM will get better. The truth hurts!

Speaking of the D being gassed, did anyone else see McCann on the sidelines in the 4th quarter? He was sitting on the bench, and it looked like he may have been throwing up, or getting ready to. One guy actually brought the large trash can over to him but he waived him off.

should have had a juco in here this year just in case. two years in a row that JJ has screwed the pooch on that. He has totally put all his eggs in BLMs basket.
